We bought a new house in the country. We won't be using trash pickup service since we can burn it. Glass, metals, & plastic will still be taken into town for recycling. My husband thinks a trash compactor is a good idea. I see it just taking up cabinet space. For $400, I am not sure it is worth it. What do you think?

If you are going to burn your trash, I see no reason for the compactor. I agree with you that the loss of cabinet space will override the convienience of storing trash longer until it is burned. $400 would buy a nice "special" appliance for the kitchen also.

I think a trash compactor is a great investment -- I wish I had one. We have so much trash, papers, as I started shredding the papers and using some of the shredded stuff for packing filler. I wish I had a compactor to relieve of so much trash to have picked up and eliminate so many bags, which is over the 2 bag limit each week and added costs for that.

Trash compactors are pretty much a "convenience" of the past. Have you ever tried to lift the compacted trash out? It weighs a ton. $400 buys a lot of great new must-haves for kitchens. Check them out instead.

Trash compactors are a great convienence if you have a large family. I have a beautiful one that I never use. I live alone and could never fill it up before it started to smell.
I'd spend the money on something else.

why would you compact garbage that your going to burn.
what ever you put in the compactor is going to be bio degradable anyway so why not just use a compost pile
