Why do people think the only reason Christians try to do good is the promise of heaven or the threat of hell. If that was the only reason for the Christian to do good or go to church or to preach the word of God it would'nt last long at all. Intelligent adults would see through this as fairy tales. True Christians are not perfect people, but they have something that the world cannot understand. True Christians have the Holy Spirit of God. This "Holy Spirit" trumps everything.

You however are leaving out an important "if" here, death we know DOES exist, the planets and earth you and me got here NOT by accident, they and you were created by a loving and all knowing God, for in the begining God and at the end, at your end, GOD, For God [The Father] "SO" Loved You that He gave [Jesus the second member of The Godhead gave Himself] that "IF" you will BE-LIVE in Him and keep His commandments because you love Him you will have eternal Life John 3:16,14:15 the reason as you put it to "be good" is NOT because of Heaven, or hell, its LOVE, that is the ONLY reason to do anything for God that He will accept, all other reasons are useless in The Judgement going on NOW, do you KNOW where you stand in that Judgement, find out more free bible lessons www.amazingfacts.org OR www.itiswritten.com talk to me also wgr88@yahoo.com God bless

lol its not 'a desire to be good' first off, coming from someone that goes to bible studies, its not a desire persae, its more, who you are... think of it as with theives, if they werent poor, would they need the desire to steal? no cause they have want they want, their nice cars, their gigantic houses, its about the path they took that made their lives what they are now. so i dont think with christians its that of that they need the desire to be good. However, by being good, most people have that naturally, i know a fair few amount of people that are good & aren't christians, many people have a wrong idea that christians aim to be perfect, i have seen many people think that, but thats not the case, its more to satisfy yourself that you have accomplished something (following the bible & doing by gods word)... well that is also coming from a personal point of view, like they say - 'to every man their is his own desire' ;)
haha hope that helps... =S

Heaven as a reward, or Hell as a consequence of my choice to reject His free gift of Salvation is not what motivates me as a Christian to be good. The motivation comes from the developing of a personal relationship with Christ and wanting to do what is good because of that relationship.

christians CAN'T be good..................................
or have the desire to be good..................................
Here's some FACTS about christians:
hell was created by christians - so shall they go there!
christians have KILLED more people in the history of humanity than any other group.
christians have persecuted millions of "non-believers" just because they DIDN'T believe in "christianity!
christians are by far the most brain-washed - brain-dead believers in the world today!
Here's the Solution to defeat religion and christianity:
Create a private, personal, direct, divine Relationship with Our Creator and save your Soul from religion.
Only with Our Creator's Love and Peace will we be Truly Free!
Love and Believe in Our Creator;
Love and Believe in Yourself.
"religion is Spiritual fraud"; "religion is the Worse invention of humanity" - Jesus Christ, Buddha and any other being with Spiritual intelligence.
Without God, there is No Love; Without religion, there are No Wars!

You're right, kindness is its own reward. Any Christian who does good for a reward is wrongly motivated. Christianity is not about "being good" it is about being forgiven. There is no amount of good we can ever do to win the reward of Heaven. It is not our goodness but Christ's.

We are not kind to be rewarded, we are kind because we love God.
Also: when you know God you become aware of how UNkind you actually are, and realise that you can never rely on your own 'good deeds'.

Certainly .... a life oriented towards pleasing God is the best way to live. The "do's" and "don't" are for our own good by a loving Father who knows best.
