In Basic English there are 850 core words.

Compare that to "The Oxford English Dictionary", 2nd edition (OED2), which includes over 600,000 definitions and the "Merriam Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged", which contains 475,000 .

You could easily read a dictionary in a year if you read it regularly, but as for how much you'll remember... I don't know.

Although English is the language with the most words in the World, the average English speaker only has around 10,000-20,000 words.

Edit: You only need about 1,000 words to communicate well, and with around 5,000 you'll sound pretty much like a native speaker of english.
