My personal opinion.
1. He brought the Church to the people.
2. His dialogue with other religions, notably Judaism, Islam, Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant denominations, are bearing fruit now. The Lutheran and Methodist churches might affiliate with the Church.
Peace and every blessing!

John Paul II was the catalyst that drove the process that freed Poland and all of eastern europe from domination by the Soviet Union, and made the practice of their native Christianity possible once again.
The process wasn't complete until the Soviet Union itself was no more.
Anyone who grew up in the 1950's, 60's, 70's and 80's knowing that an "Iron Curtain" separated the free people of europe from their communist-enslaved brothers and sisters, knows what a great miracle that was.
And anyone who ever had the opportunity to look across the expanse of "no man's land" that separated west from east, and free man from slave, couldn't fail to notice the difference.
To the west there was beauty and peace, symbolized by neat little homes, nicely kept up, with flower boxes, lawns, gardens, and people who were free to pursue their own version of happiness.
In the east there was nothing but faded gray structures, decrepit, graceless, and foreboding. No paint. No flowers. No cute little homes. And the pursuit of happiness had long ago been surrendered to the demands of the Godless and failing communist state.
The other thing John Paul II did was publicly represent Catholicism and true Christianity to the whole world, in a way that had never been seen before ... at least during modern times ... something he continued to do, it right up until the very last moment of his life here on earth.
April 2 was the anniversary of his death, and our current Pope Benedict XVI had this to say about his long time friend, and coworker:
"Servant of God," Benedict XVI exclaimed, "this is what he was and this is what we call him now in the Church, while the process of his beatification continues apace.
Servant of God, a particularly appropriate title for him.
The Lord called him to His service on the path of the priesthood and little by little opened ever vaster horizons before him: from his diocese, to the Universal Church.
This universal dimension reached its greatest extent at the moment of his death, an event that the entire world experienced with a level of participation never before seen in history."
I saw John Paul II once, in Chicago, when he stopped by to say Mass for me, and about a quarter million of my closest friends.
He seemed like a very nice fellow, and a good priest ... and it's those two things that continue to impress me the most.

Those are all opinions. I say that he brought faith and peace to all. He canonized most saints and caused the largest human gathering on earth in 1995, more than five million people.
