bumpers are not recommended by SIDS organisations as in the website below. it is up to you whether you want to take that on board. i know from experience that sometimes it is tempting to ignore such recommendations. when my baby started putting her legs and arms through the cot and bumping her head etc i was tempted to get bumpers. then while i was thinking about it, she stopped doing it! as someone else said, even with bumpers they can still stick their legs out etc. if your cot meets safety regulations (other website has a good guide, see below), the bars should be the correct distance apart and not enough for baby to stick their head through etc.

No, bumpers are safe. They're safer than a crib without bumpers, because a child could become lodged between the mattress and the crib -- or limbs lodged in the railing. Bumpers are recommended by the AAP.
Quote from the source below regarding bumpers: "The ties need to be cut as short as possible, and the top and bottom edges of the bumper should be well secured (at least at each corner and at the midpoint of each side of the crib). When your child is able to pull up to a standing position, you should remove the bumpers so that he doesn't use them to climb on."

U can try, and not succeed. Sorry but all you can do is let him grow and help him out if his feet or hands get thru the railing. The crib my son was in had bumpers and he stuck his arms and legs under or over them to put them thru the bars. He's in a bed now and so far just bruises and a few cuts but no broken bones.Just part of growin up.

I am 57, my daughter is now 27. She lived through bumper pads. if you are worried about them - go to the babystore and ask what the recommendation is these days.

we kept bumpers on till' out daughter (now 2) could start to pull at them - it's so "on-and-off" with the "should do, and shouldn't do" stuff.
