The problems are most noticeably worse at night when I'm trying to lie still to go to sleep. However, it is a horrible problem that I'm debating whether or not the debilitating back pain is a better alternative to scratching my skin off. Anyone have any help, alternatives, suggestions. I need it bad.

I assume the medication is like Vicodin, Hydrocodone or another codeine type medication. If so this is completely normal. When patients develop this we have standing orders for Benadryl 25mg to 50mg every 4 hours. You can also use Benadryl creme or hydrocortisone creme for the areas that are flared up and red now. Good luck.

I went through this a few months back and found out I was allergic to codeine, which is an opiate derivative like morphine. I broke out in hives and even though I've been off the medication for a couple of months now, my skin still isn't quite back to normal. My doctor switched me to Darvocet and put me on Prednisone (a steroid) which DID clear up the hives, but caused me to eat everything that wasn't nailed down!

So good luck to you. I got some relief using hydrocortisone cream, Benadryl cream, Aveeno and Gold Bond lotions.

Some pain medications cause unbearable itching. You may be allergic to something in the medications you are using. Try 50 mg. Benadryl every 4-6 hours for relief but you should tell your doctor about the problem. It's likely you can be switched to another medication that will not cause this problem.

I have had similar reactions to some narcotics. Try taking 50 mg. of Benedryl (two pills) the generic kind works just as well.

Also I would talk to my doctor because there are narcotics and strong pain relievers that do not have that side effect. For example, I was taking oxycodone which caused the itching problem, after talking with my physician she switched me to a fentenol patch - no more itching - same amount of pain relief.

I wish you luck with your problem, I totally understand it.

Try the benedryl until you can talk to your doctor - it really works!

you may have an allergy to codeine. most good pain killers have some amount in them. it causes enhanced itchiness. there is a drug that they administer with morphine thru IV that decreases itchiness and nausea, but i dont know if it's in pill form. if you have a script, call your doctor and see if they can call in another drug without codeine.other than that, douse yourself in baby powder, and smoke a joint. that will help a little. good luck

My Harley loves to set in the parking lot at strip clubs. If you are going to behave there you have no business being there. Fuzzy holes that is a new one for me.......I love it. Rock on!
