This isn't a question but I just had to say that I've been perusing the tattoo section and there are an awful lot of people answering tattoo questions who are obviously opposed to tattoos. First of all... if you are against them then you probably don't have one, so you probably shouldn't be giving advice on getting them. Second... you don't like them... we get it... That doesn't mean you have to degrade those of us who have them. Third... we've heard the whole "picture yourself old and fat" a million times. You honestly think we haven't thought about later ramifications? Maybe, just maybe, the things we are getting permanently etched onto our bodies are important enough to us that we won't mind them sagging over the years. Tattooing is an art. It's not for everyone. But those of us who appreciate it and enjoy it would really like it if haters would just leave us alone. Nothing you do or say will change our minds.

I'm hoping to get this question starred so more people get in on the discussion... I'm really curious to see what people say.

Wow... great responses! You guys are great! I kind of wanted to see what the tattoo "haters" had to say... but I think we scared them away! It's going to be really tough picking a best answer... particularly because this wasn't a question! I have five tats myself... You can see a couple on my myspace... www.myspace.com/day_eight

Aaaah, yes. You said that so eloquently. I tried a similar rant but I wasn't nearly as nice as you are. You get a star from me!

The people who dislike tats come & go. The new questions posed show up on the main YA list, so it isn't just us regulars & friendlies who see it.
That the questions are out in the open doesn't invalidate your commentary. I've been intrigued by their limited understanding and ignorant stereotypes. I can't imagine living a life where I'm so intent on telling others what to do that I ignore my own development to such an extreme extent. Advice if asked, fine, and at least kept civil, but the utter crudity and brutality of some is beyond me.
I've posed a few questions myself over these stereotypes, but the nature of YA is that the old is forgotten quickly. You'll be lucky if a good point made today is seen tomorrow, and luckier still if someone looks for it in the archive.
However, I like what you're doing, so I'll get all kindergarten-teacher on this & give you a star. :)

As crazy as some if not very many people will think this, BUT, has anyone read the New Testament yet? Wait!!! If you're thinking that I'm attempting to convert you, you're incorrect! In the N.T., in John it says(I'm paraphrasing here so it isn't completely accurate) that any man with long hair or short hair is okay. The same for women. Any guy cut or uncut is okay. Any person marked(put tattooed here if you will) or pierced so that it is permanent, it's okay. Now, I know I'm talking about something else entirely here, yet the point is the same: Who cares about it? It is no body elses business what you have or haven't done to your body in the pursuit of happiness!

My daughter is a fine artist, she won her 1st art show in 10th grade for a oil painting she did.we put her through art school to go on to get B.A. degree. I'm proud to say she can work in many different types of art,but for now her chosen career in art is tattooing, and because of her art back ground her tattoos are all the more beautiful.
On top of that she's also a Born Again Christian, and works in Christian tattoo shop(Tattolicious in Waikiki H.I.). If anybody tries to tell you that's wrong,....their wrong there nothing wrong with tattoo's per say only what some decides to get on their body(I.e satanic stuff or symbols of hate)) that's it.

I'm 40 yrs old and today i am getting my first tattoo, I have always wanted a tattoo since i was about 15-16 years old, I used to draw all the time and have a talent for drawing, i love all art, The reason i waited so long was because I raised my kids and i respected my husband as he always told me he would rather me not get one....So that's what i did, whats different now is that i bugged him for 21 years to let me get one lol and he even came into the tattoo parlor with me...He knew what i wanted and helped me find the right one, i made him part of it.
I am getting a fairy sitting on a rose praying and surrounding her will say "God Bless Our Troops" I love fairys always have, I love roses big time, and since real roses don't last forever, this one will, and the reason it will say God Bless Our Troops is because both my husband and son are in the army.
As for people saying to me "your going to have that for the rest of your life" I say so, i'm 40, the rest of my life is just what 40 years..lol I raised my kids, had a good time doing it, it's my time now to enjoy the things i have always wanted.
I have also heard people tell me, why are you getting a fairy thats praying, your catholic! I told them because thats my choice and if you don't like it, then don't look at it!!! or if you do look at it, think of her as an angel without her halo...lol
There is always going to be people out there that will judge others. Do i care? Nope!

Well said.
I am 38 and have a tattoo (a small yellow rose) that I got when I was 23. I love my tat but there have been a few times I felt very judged and and it made me feel trashy. I honestly don't think I'd change the past though... like I said... I love my tattoo.

Couldn't have said it better myself. People seem to have really strong opinions of tattoos. If that is the case, probably not for you. I know more than a few people who have gotten tattoos as a memorial to a loved one. I have one and I wear it with pride. These special people in our lives will be with us forever and fortunately so will their names and/or pictures on our bodies. If people who hated tattoos ever took the time to listen to the stories and the significance behind them, they might look at them differently. I love what you wrote, my friend!

Right on! I am so with you.
Also, just wanted to add, why do complete strangers feel the need to interrogate you about why you got a tattoo, or why you got it in a certain place. I don't go up to people and criticism their appearance, fashion sense, attitude or stupidity!
