then as an atheist I want tax breaks, official buildings, I want to try and butt into government issues, and I want to sneak science into science class!

Well then if atheism was a religion it would be the only one that is self evident. Atheism is grounded in logic and reason so it would be the best one. It doesn't ask its practitioner's to babble incoherently about non-existent things like god, souls, heaven, hell or spirits. It doesn't promise punishment for not believing in it although it never offered credible evidence or reason to believe. It doesn't require you to rely on faith, faith being a cop-out on all humanity. It doesn't require gullibility in order to believe. It doesn't require you to blindly believe in something for which there is no evidence for. With atheism you don't have to commit intellectual suicide.

Atheists are not out to prove or disprove the existence of a higher being. It's really an inaccurate term because identifying oneself as an atheist suggests there is a defined set of beliefs (as you suggested the "faith" of not believing in bigfoot.)
I think it is accurate to say most "atheists" are simply people who have an agnostic way of thinking. That is, they neither believe nor disbelieve in a higher power. It could be possible but they don't profess faith in it.

Atheism is a lack of a belief. It does not require any mental activity of any sort -- faith, reason, whatever. You don't "choose" not to believe in a god -- you have simply not been given any reason to believe in one. Therefore it is irrelevant and does not exist from your perspective.

Despite what many people are claiming, atheism is not a 'religion'. Atheism and faith are mutually exclusive.
I like your point however!

Asserting that atheism is a religion is akin to saying all those who don't believe in flying pink elephants are really a religion--probably a dangerous cult too--!!

Basically Atheism is in fact a religion, and it takes more faith to believe in Atheism than God. Why, because Atheism is an absolute negative and logically indefensible.

It isn't.Christians especially try to use this as an argument to show that atheists must have some sort of faith. They cannot get their heads around the fact that we simply do not believe in the existance of their god

Both the Atheist and the Fundamentalist Christian are people of faith. They both are relying on their mind to tell them about what they perceive to be truth. Each is basing their ideas on 'faith'. The opposite of faith is experience. Both sides need to let go of what they believe and just put them self in the experience of the deep silence of the world. Then they will find something different and other which will not require mere faith.

you have to belive that you don't believe. Unless you don;t believe in any belief. Then your belief is in nothing but you need to believe that or your just fooling around.
So in that case Atheism is a religion.
