Why do some of you insist we are so oppressed because we cover our beauty? Did some of you ever think that maybe we were tired of being valued on how small our waists are or how big our chests are? I have not met a single muslim woman who was forced to wear the veil, and I've been to Pakistan and Kuwait. In Pakistan, they walk around, heads uncovered, and some wearing tight salwar kameezes (long shirt and pants). Is it too much to ask you to look at us with an open mind and to let go of the stereotypes?

It's not my culture, it's my religion. I am an American citizen, born and raised, as my mother is. I'm half Irish and half German.

You look at me and call me oppressed,
Simply because of the way I'm dressed,

You know me not for what is inside,
You judge the clothing I wear with pride,

My body is not for your eyes to hold,
You must speak to my mind, not my feminine mould,

I'm an individual. I'm no man's slave,
It's Allah's pleasure that I only crave,

I have a voice so I will be heard,
For in my heart I carry His word,

"O ye women, wrap close your cloak,
So you won't be bothered by ignorant folk".

Man doesn't tell me to dress this way,
It's law from God that I obey,

Oppressed is something I'm truly not,
For liberation is what I've got,

It was given to me many years ago,
With the right to prosper, the right to grow,

I can climb mountains or cross the seas,
Expand my mind in all degrees,

For God Himself gave us liberty,
When He sent Islam, to you and me !

Mwah sister! the video was jus AWESOME!

It is natural in most places to distrust or look suspect on someone that does not show their face. In a lot of cases I don't believe that it is because a women is Muslim but just the natural tendency for many people to be weary of someone that covers their face. It is hard for many westerners to understand that some Muslims choose to wear a veil just because it is not part of our norms. Unfortunately many westerners assume that everyone sees things their way and if a women is covered it can't be voluntary. They forget that some Muslim women are rooted in tradition and/or religion and have chose to cover themselves. It is a stereotype that can only be broken by knowledge and women like you who can inform people even if it is one at a time.

Beautiful video and beautiful women EVEN COVERED. I loved the analogy of a veiled heart as that is what most of the world has, this is a FAR more important issue needing addressed then women who CHOOSe to wear it. All through the Christian Old Testament and Jewish history are many references to women having their heads covered. It is only an excuse to complain about something that most people do nto fully understand sadly simply because they do not WANT to comprehend anythign outside their own small worlds.

I have dial up so I'll just take your word for in about the video clip.

No, I don't view Islamic women as being oppressed because of the clothing they wear. As long as no one is forcing them to wear it and it's of their own free accord, how can it be oppressive? To some extent I'd have to say the opposite is true in that in America people often expect you to wear skimpy clothes, that can be oppressive in it's own right. No one should be presured to wear a certain type of outfit.

I do view Islam and different religions/cultures with an open mind. because I have traveled to different countries I understand there's different cultures and different ways of looking at things.

Yep, I did comprehend that (in a prevalent sense). human beings opt to get well from their hatred of religions different to their very own, and be life like about the final public of persons that're followers of any faith. regrettably, many human beings do not difficulty to educate themselves on the religious practices of different religions, somewhat Islam, and others only refuse to. i'm no longer Muslim, and that i by no potential will be, yet I truthfully have a life like understanding of what the religion is about, and others might want to objective to keep an open concepts too.

Muslim women are not the same in the country where is the majority muslim people. It depends on the government policy and the fatwa of the muslim ulamas .If there is no fatwa and no government regulation about the clothes of muslim women most of them will be unveil and no scarves. The compliance to the Allah's instruction in the holy qur'an for wearing veil or scarve is up to them because there is no force in Islam
.Muslim women in Pakistan and Kuwait feel free to uncover ed or covered their heads .Most of them have the opinion that they will be more modern than the woman who covered her head with scarve or jilbab..They are bored to wear muslim woman cloth.

Amen.

Agreed.

In the Jewish tradition and in the Christian Old Testament, there are verses in scripture that indicate women covering their heads and dressing modestly.

Yet, for some reason, we cannot fathem doing it.

I think, as a student of Middle Eastern studies, that this is nothing abnormal....Rather, society has come up with their own definition of what "normal" is.

I think that you have opened my mind a little bit more. The general impression most Americans get is that Muslim women are forced to wear the veils and scarves because their husbands don't want anyone else to see "their women's" bodies...I feel a little more clarified... I thought the video was great:)
