I am graduating from community college in the fall and I have no idea what field of study I want to continue, I also have a million more things going on in my life. Well, everytime I talk to someone about it they always say "pray on it and god will guide you"..so I have been for the last 2 months and I have had nothing hit me in the head from heaven so, I just want to know has anyone ever prayed on something and got a sign or is this just something people say when they have nothing else to say.

Actually, I have prayed for many things that I know God can do in this system of things. I prayed for the job I currently hold so I can dedicate more time to giving Bible studies. I pray for everything....but you have to know how to pray for it, when to pray for it and how to show gratitude:

Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious over anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication along with thanksgiving let YOUR petitions be made known to God

I used to pray but when I found it was largely just a huge wishlist I pretty much stopped. What can you do in prayer? ask for material things? Ask for blessings? Offer thanks. Okay, it's probably impossible to express gratitude too often but that's not solving your direction problem. No, if I've got a problem like that, I like to just go to the local coffee place in off hours, grab a seat on the couch and bring some notepaper and a pen. Write th important features of each option, draw up a plan to achieve the desired outcome. Don't go where you're likely to be disturbed by friends (a library maybe). Prayer is all talk, not the same as thinking about or meditating on something.

Yes, you should pray for God's guidance, but at the same time you need to do whatever you can to help you pursue your future. It's like someone praying for a job, and never filling out an application, It doesn't work that way. Find out information on fields you might be interested in, and as you do this, things will begin to fall into place. When you have peace of mind, you will know your prayers have been answered.

The only way you can make such a decision is by using your brain, not by praying to an imaginary deity. Make a list of fields that appeal to you, list the pros and cons of each, determine exactly what it is you want to acheive and go from there. You can always change fields at some later time, right? Talk to a school counselor about it, and also find information online. This all requires effort and brain power on your part--life's answers won't just drop out of the sky for you, no matter what your religious friends might say.

I have the same problem. I didnt know what i wanted to major in. i prayed about it for what seemed like forever. Sometimes it just isnt the right timing. about a month later-i was watching tlc- and a wedding show came on on somone who planned weddings and had a business degree. I felt this overwhelming feeling of peace rush over me and I started to cry- the feeling of happiness and no stupor of thought was amazing- i knew it was my answer . I aslo suggest fasting- it is amazing- pray for what you are needing and go without food or drink for 2 meals then close your fst with a prayer- its a little extra boost to your prayer. and donate the money you wouldve spent on food to your church- or if you dont do that to a charity.

It starts with prayer that asks for guidance.
Then there's the waiting for the answer. This involves trusting that you will be led to the answer. It's not a substitute for lack of ideas.

Prayer is not passive. What are you doing to determine the gifts and talents that you already possess? Have you taken any tests to determine your interests and abilities?
If something hits you in the head, it's likely just something that you ran into because you were not watching where you were going.

Whenever I pray on things I always get frustrated if I dont get the answer as soon as I'd like. But by continually praying, it teaches me to fully rely on the lord and give everything over to him. And then, at the last minute, numerous options come up and its up to me to take a step of faith in choosing the one I believe the Lord tells me to persue. Thats just how He works in my life when it comes to the next step. keep praying

I'm a devout Catholic but I would say to you if you don't know what work or career suits you, then go out there and find out. Offer you services to industries on a volunteer basis and observe yourself without engaging your emotions. Contrary to opinion by career advisers, a person's abilities are not a reliable gauge of what is the ideal work for each one of us.
I personally agree with Matthew in the Gospels about ...Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find...
You may not find instantly but if you search with a pure heart, you will definietly find an answer.

If you're not getting the answers you'd like, perhaps you either have to ask those hard questions of yourself, instead.

Religions that stress meditation often put one in tune with what you could consider "divine answers." Without mental discipline, you're just wasting the energy.

Praying about something makes you think about it, and helps your mind figure it out. That's all.
