Of course you're talking about the events foretold in Revelations - the apocalypse. You're not the first to bring this up. In fact, I read a book in 1972 or 1973 called "The Late Great Planet Earth" that beat you to this punch.

Greed
Ecological anthropologist John Bennett (Human Ecology as Human Behavior 1995) wrote that levels of human greed are learned, and that there are two basic arguments about greed.

1) Greed is a constant, built into human behavior, inescapable
- no finite limits
- conferred on humans genetically
- conferred on humans by their need to realize themselves in a social milieu
- inevitable biologically and socially

2) Greed is a variable
- it is ultimately punished or checked by the social environment
- stimulated or diminished by the social environment
- created by cultural values
- especially created when culture refers to satisfactions stimulated by detachment or ignorance of nature

“The difference between these two is largely false. Greed is an innate manifestation of human behavior, but human behavior is always capable of modification by culture” (Bennett 1995). Bennett pointed out the following:
• Wants are basic to the organism
• Wants can be formed or controlled by experience
• The problem becomes a matter of the social mechanisms that encourage excess in the human spirit.

Those groups who permit most of their members to live in what is believed to be ‘freedom’ from environmental constraints, accentuate greed as ‘normal’ behavior.

Or if your a nutter then its god punishing all us sinners. But I doubt it.
