Every since I moved to So Cal, I have heard many people talk about or mention the San Fernando Valley. They all act like it is this "cool place" to go to. I went there a few times and drove around. From what I saw, the valley is a completely run-down s*** hole. Even South-Central neighborhoods look nicer than the ones in the valley. The people in the valley act like they live in paradise. The only thing that the valley seems to be know for is the porn industry (which as a young guy who actually has decent morals, I do not support). That and the fact that it is also an industrial wasteland makes it an even bigger crap hole. So why do people act like "the valley" is the place to be in LA? Also, the title of "the valley" actually belongs to the Central Valley of California, so why do people refer to the San Ferando Valley as "the valley?"

I live in san fernando valley.. it is a sh*thole.
HAHAHAH porn industry.. Porn industry did one thing that helped us tremendously. North HIlls/Northridge area was the first one to get cable internet in entire LA. that is totally true. On top of that, in some areas over the hill, you cannot get fast internet cause telephone lines are too old. Well, either you are SF valley person or over the hill person. There are reasons behind it. First. it is hard to get lost in SF valley. Parking is a lot easier. Partying here sucks but if you want to go hiking, camping or whatever else you can think of, SF is your place. SF valley refered as valley because of a movie Valley Girl. Second reason, we have griffith park and observatory. Then the third reason, Valley people refuse to go over the hill because of 405, traffic, too many people, temperature *it is a bit colder over the hill than in the valley. Forth, it is a hidden rebellion against the over the hill people. They dont come over here either. But wait till our megamall opens up on victory and topanga. Fifth, SF valle ypeople want to get the hell out of LA county. Most of the funding goes outside. Only recently we got the funding to fix this place. The bottom line, most people here want their own identity. Hopefully partying will improve here since we have CSUN, Valley and Pierce colleges here. Sixth, SF valley is still scattered whereas the rest of LA is compacted. Seventh, we have the fastest internet access anywhere in LA.

i hope this explains why SF valley people do what they do

Cheers!

As a (nearly) life long valley girl, i resent your implications.

there is a well-known sobbery amoung those of "the westside" who love to bash the valley.

granted, there are areas decay here, as there are everywhere, but there are parts that are very affulent. Consider our history.

after WWII, there was a momumental building boom, helped in part by a popular record made by Bing Crosby, which went in part, "I'm gonna settle down and never more roam, / and make the San Fernando Valley my home." There are valley's everywhere. No one owns the designation.

You could buy a house here, (relatively) cheap, it would have an actual yard, with space for a pool, a garden. You can keep horses here. There are still patches of farmland. There was industry, Lockheed and other areospace companies, an airport, GM, to name but a few. We have no claustophic high rises, plenty of parking, much of it free, wide open skies where you can see the mountains. The fog doesn't sock us in like it does "over the hill." There are still places where you see what the first europeans saw when then first came here.

Okay, so we don't have a Disney concert hall. Instead, we have Disney Studios. Did you know uncle Walt wanted to build Disneyland in Burbank? So we are not the center of culture and high brow doings. We are a residential community. People come here to live, not to go to the opera.

I think the beach is over-rated. It's too cold and too cloudy to swim 11 months out of the year. Better to swim in your own pool here where it actually gets hot enough to appreciate.

If the place is not to your taste, so be it. More room for the rest of us. Personally, I rarely go to the west side. Not only because of the traffic, but there is just nothing I need there that I can't get here.

And as for the porn industry, unless you're out looking for it, you would probably never know it's going on. I've never seen any in 40 years of living here.

Because of the current economy, you might not need no stinkin coupons. During the week, many restaurants are offering specials to try to pull in customers. Most of them exclude weekends. Another source are some of those free papers such as LA Weekly always have restaurant ads. BTW, I don't think you will find any truely 5 star and just a couple 4 star restaurants in SF Valley. There are probably only a dozen in the LA area.

I've lived in the valley my whole life. I have NEVER heard anyone say it's "special" or the place to live. Who are you hanging out with?! Everyone seems to always talk about how much cooler the west side is with the beaches and nightlife etc. We valley folk are always called the "hicks" of L.A.
Anyways, I find your comments really rude. It's my hometown, and I wish folks like you would go back to whatever state you came from. We've got enough traffic out here.

The Fernando Vally has a population of 1.5 million people. If you took what goes on in the valley and moved i to the mid west it would be considered one of the largest city in the US. There is cal-state Northridge, at least eight hospitals, Rocketdyne, etc. If you find the San Fernando Valley so objectionable please do not come here, it is congested enough.

Well, copestir lives there so it must be pretty cool and good enough for me....Some people just aren't happy anywhere, it's their nature...and no sense wasting your time trying to change them....
