I would recommend getting a amp, high powered door speakers, tweeters, or if you dont want to get a amp then get a headunit with a built in amp but if you get a whole sepperet amp if will sound clearer. hope this helps

Heavy metal music involves a lot of mid-bass (upper bass, or lower midrange) so if you want to add a sub to your system (other dudes explained what that is, already) then I would recommend using a sealed box.
Subwoofer boxes, just as much as the actual sub, determine the sound quality and output levels. Sealed boxes offer better quality reproduction as the sub is more controlled as well as higher power handling for the sub. Ported boxes are louder but don't offer as high-quality bass as sealed boxes do. They won't allow as much power as sealed, also.
SPL (Sound Pressure Level, loud bass) competitions are won with ported boxes. SQ (Sound Quality) comp's are won using sealed boxes. Boxes really do make or break the sub.
I recommended sealed for you b/c the reproduction will be much more accurate. I, too, have my subs in sealed boxes b/c I listen to different kinds of music and want to hear all the details.

For a decent priced SQ sub, get a pair of TC Sounds 200wrms 12" for $105 apiece, not bad. For SPL, if that's what you'll want, Kicker all the way. Kicker is responsible (like it's a bad thing) for 75% of ALL SPL comp's -in the world.

Choose wisely! Good Luck!

for music like that i would say go with 1 or 2 10" subs since 10s hit a little faster to keep up with that type of music. 12s hit harder and deeper, more for rap. get a good head unit, a component set up front and 3ways in the rear. u can run those off the headunit but it will be much louder and clearer if u use a 4channel amp. good wires are also very important too

a sub will produce the lower level octaves that we cannot hear as well as some of the higher up of the lowers (if that made sense). the ones we cannot hear we feel as a wave. a sub will level out your stereo and enhance your system, as well as turn heads, :D

Mids, highs, and tweets will help keep all your sounds clean.
