It is not a requirement that the bride pay for everything, or anything ... there is certain etiquette when dealing with wedding costs and a break-down of financial responsibilites, but there are very few couples who still use it.
A lot of couples actually choose to pay for everything on their own ... it just depends on what contributions both sets of parents are planning on making and what oyu and your fiance can afford. Budget is everything when determining the size and style of your wedding.

In the U.S., the bride or the bride's family generally pays for the costs associated with the wedding. If your marriage is taking place in the U.S., then I would say go with the U.S. custom; if it is taking place elsewhere, go with the customs of that part of the world. Like the old saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
That, however, is tradition, and not necessarily practical for everyone. A bride and groom certainly need to work out the details to decide what is sensible based on what they and their families can reasonably afford.

Traditionally the bride's family pays for the wedding, but I'll tell you I don't know anybody where that is the case anymore. I paid an assload for my first wedding although I did get a couple thousand for the bride's family.

Depends on the tradition you decide to folow; Old-fashioned American tradition states that the birde's family pays for the wedding; an old testament to the concept of a "dowry" I would assume. These days though, I see most American families all pitching in, especially middle-class ones. Weddings are expensive & when all family members pitch in, it eases the financial stress on everyone & brings them all together!

in america according to traditions, there are certain parts of the wedding the parents of the bride pay for, certain parts the parents of the groom pay for, and certain parts anybody can pay for. even those traditions dont really matter any more unless you want them too, and anybody can pay for anything.

No way. I would just leave it up to your parents to decide how much they want to give. Your fiance's parents should give you money as well. Then the couple cover the rest of the costs. Good luck :o)
