You're getting this dog for a watchdog. You're going to keep it in the backyard.
Ask yourself this, What exactly is my dog protecting in the backyard?
Unless you plan to put all your belongings in your yard, having a watchdog locked in the backyard is useless.
Bring him inside where he'll be happier, and actually be able to watch your things.

Why are you getting a large dog for a watch dog and the only thing he is going to watch is the dog pen?
What happens if an intruder is trying to get into the house from the side or the front?
Even if they try to get in from the back and the wind is from the right direction, your dog probably wouldn't even know anyone was around.
Even if the dog barks, you will get use to his barking and eventually you will start to block it out while your neighbors have to listen to it all night.
I have 2 dogs. . female Shepherd mix and a 14 lb Yorkie that pretty much stay in the house during the night and bark when something is going on outside. . . they alert me with the barking.
My neighbors have their dogs outside and barking all night long which as a general rule makes my dogs bark when they don't really need to bark. . . . VERY annoying.
A dog in the backyard is soon forgotten except for food and water (hopefully) and becomes nothing more than the JUNKYARD dog that eventually is no longer social and then becomes a threat should it ever get out.
Rethink your plan.

I personally feel it's better for the watch dog to be in the fenced back yard for some reasons, outside rather than in the dog kennel ( a same word for dog pen) but if you want the dog in the kennel, be sure a very large one. Or you could make the two sides of the fenced yard like mine, the dog do have the feelings, if you keep the dog in closed , small spaces, the dog will might react differently, and become a meanest dog, may harm the visitors (friends) I have seen them in person and had some insights from my friends who works with the animals who against for the small spaces and not well ventilation( a dog house isinde the dog kennel) etc.Let you know. The dogs do love to run some., not chained down or very small space not to run around.
If you still want to make the choice to have the dog kennel, The website is:http://www.dog-chat.org/Dog-Kennels.html. It tells you everything about the dog kennel.

Be prepared to have an unhappy, digging dog. What the hell is a dog gonna watch in a pen in the back yard? He's gonng be frustrated, bored, and when you do finally allow him out of the pen, he's gonna go berzerk. Dogs are social animals and need to be around people or other dogs. Please don't leave him alone in a pen all day.
Please rethink this. If you're looking for protection, how about a gate across your driveway, or a large fenced yard where your beloved watchdog can roam and do some good, i.e. watching.

first andforemost you must post signs stating that there is a gaurd dog on duty, a no tresspassing sign in good visable sight from each outside fence, this will help protect you if god forbid something happen and your dog screwed somone up real bad check with you city gov ask for any info for protecting your self against a liabilities next you go get you a rhodeshin ridgeback let him have some run of the yard dont fence him away from enterances and interact w/ him as much as possible then get you a yipper for inside the house to listen(for you) he will alert you if he hears somthing he'll try to alert you

A dog in a pen in the backyard will not protect you. except to bark if and when it can see someone about. You need to take your pet and interact with it several times a day if possible. Play with it..walk with it..etc. You can't just leave a dog in a pen (which personally I think is cruel), but I don't mean anything bad to you....but it's best if you can interact with them daily and/or as much as you can....

The dog will probably bark at everything or nothing depending on the dog's temperment.
What you are asking the dog to do is protect something he doesn't even know exists......a home and family.
If you don't have the dog in the house he is not going to make it his protected territory.......
So a dog in a pen is going to protect his pen. Not so great for your goal.

If you want a dog to help you feel protected you should keep it in the house. I don't want this to sound mean but having a dog outside will not protect you especially is someone comes in the front of your house. I don't like when dogs are left outside by themselves all the time anyway. If you want you should keep it inside as a companion. Just please re-think leaving the dog outside.

you're better off with an alarm. a penned up dog tends to turn mean after awhile. which is natural. it will bark at anything. but probably not the reason you got it. it will be a better watchdog if it was in the house with you. the protection instinct will develop. being pinned up will not protect you. just cause you more problems.

Dogs are pack animals and enjoy the company of their family. It is not healthy AT ALL for any animal to be kept alone in a backyard. If you want a real watch dog you should keep him in your house, and treat him as a family member. EXERCISE him (yes daily walks), give him lots of love, and play games that stimulate his mind. Give him a reason to want to watch out for you!
