Tyson was hung over and took him lightly. Douglas went into that fight the way he did any other.

Mike coasted into that fight, and as was previously mentioned Buster's mom had passed since his most recent fight...he was fighting for her memory and with nothing to lose, the odds for that fight reflected it as Buster was over 25-1 to win that fight (45 as I recall but I could be wrong)...the fight was staged in Japan and it looked like the whole house took the short price as after Mike got knocked down the place got quiet and all those in attendance looked like they were watching a horror movie...after buster cracked Mike and he was on all fours attempting to put his mouthpiece back in (crooked...looked like a drunk crack fiend in the dark) one could tell the upset of the decade was occurring, buster kept mike at the end of a long jab and hit him with a few nice homers...my friend
taped it and played it over and over that night...freakin great...

If the James "Buster" Douglas victory over Mike Tyson wasn't the biggest single upset in the history of boxing, the blogbaba don't know a bigger one. If we knew what empowered Buster that night in Tokyo, and could somehow teach it to other fighters, Angelo Dundee and Eddie Futch wouldn't be the best corner men in the history of the sport anymore, we would.
Buster simply decided he wasn't afraid of Mike, and went to work. I hesitate to speculate on the emotional impact of Buster's personal loss with his mother's then recent passing, I simply do not know what effect such a loss would have. Clearly, his post fight dedication to his mother made it clear it was significant to him.
The perfomance itself made Tarver's left hook or Ray Leonard's track meet against Hagler seem ordinary. Even Holyfield's victory over Mike in their first fight wasn't as immense a shock to the boxing world. Buster beat Mike down, and copied Sylvester Stallone's movie script in real life.
It may have been the single greatest boxing feat of the modern era. I wish I knew his mind set, with was as close to perfectly invincible as a fighter could have got.

Buster Douglas' mum had died 6-8 weeks before the fight.
She was his greatest supporter. He used her memory as the power in him for the fight. He dedicated his effort to her.
Very powerful energy.

He was really focused on winning. His mother passed away days before the fight and he kinda used that as motivation to win. To win the fight for his mother was all he thought of.
