according to Wlkipedia, under carbon dioxide, the levels of carbon dioxide were 20 times higher 500 million years ago and the planet didn't burst into flames, as Al Gore says it will

Al Gore does NOT say the planet will burst into flames, although many people on this forum seem to think he does.

And the Sun was cooler 500 million years ago. The sun has warmed about 30% in the 4 billion or so years since it formed. That would imply the Sun was 8% cooler 500 million years ago. That also implies that 500 million years in the future we will be in serious trouble, but warming of the Sun is too slow to have a measurable effect in only 100 years or even 10,000 years. The source is the first part of a really good article about this subject. Unfortunately (for you, I subscribe to the magazine) you will have to pay to read more than the introduction. Either that or go to the library.

Weather Al said it or not the thing is people still believe him and not the actual facts. That's why the first couple of answers were so hostile. They don't like it when big Al is wrong. People cannot except the fact that the earth is a dynamic place and the weather is not static.
You could have used a better example such as the Carboniferous period. The planet was much greener then due to the higher CO2 and there was no global warmers to complain it was too hot.
The sheep must think that Al Gore is a god because everything he says they believe and if you disagree then people will trash you and say that your full of lies or a heretic.

Yeah, the whole thing is just a big money grab.

If science were still taught in high schools we wouldn't have too many people accepting the Al Gore bogus movie at all.

The good thing is that more and more are seeing it for what it really is.

We were in a cooling trend from 1940 to 1975 and have been on a warming trend since then. So there's no way humans have anything to do with global temperatures.

Check out this movie if you haven't already seen it:

Actually according to science 500 million years ago the temp was such that life as we know it would have not been able to live. The earth was inhospitable and devoid of pretty much all life except for anarobic bacteria and those single cell organisims best suited for life under such extreme conditions. Some of those can still be found in Yosemite National Park. So yes Science has proven that 500 million years ago there were higher levels of CO2 in the air but life as we know it wasn't around either. If we are going to argue levels of CO2 through out earths history I would have to say that we need to do it in relation to the species that now populate the earth. Apples to Apples not Apples to KUMKWATS. 'Nough said.

I don't think anyone is saying the planet is going to burst into flames. Stop exaggerating!
