I'll agree with all of the answers above saying that 5 MP is good enough for full-frame 8x10 or 8½x11 enlargements. In fact, I wrote a very lengthy answer about that last night.

HOWEVER - the particular 5 MP camera you are looking at requires a warning label!!! "Do not attempt to make enlargements of any pictures where you have used the digital zoom." This camera has ONLY got a digital zoom. The way that works is to "supersize" the pixels and this will quickly degrade the image quality. It might start out as a 5 MP image, but as you "zoom," all it does is enlarge the pixels. This will look fine on the relatively tiny LCD monitor (as compared to a 4x6 or 8x10 print), but it will look like blocks of color if you try to make an 8x10 print from it.

A 5MP Camera Will Produce A Good 8x10 (8 1/2 X11) Print... IF You Don't Crop More Than 20 to 25% If you Want Top Quality, You Will Need More Pixels Or An "Uncompressed" (Non-JPEG) Image. Some Cameras Let You Take Pictures In TIFF (Uncompressed) Or RAW (Uncompressed AND Unprocessed)

Very definetely. It depends on the specific camera and it's lens quality. I own a camera with lots of optical zoom at 12. It's 6 megapixels the Sony Cybershot DSC-H2. My daughter likewise excellent 8X10s, 10X optical zoom, her camera is Fufifilm Finepix S5200. 5 megapixels, excellent on AA rechargeable batteries.Only 1 second delay between shots.
PS- don't get into the megapixel hype. There have been SOME cameras at 4 MP which when enlarged took also excellent 8X10s. AND some cameras with 6 or 7 MP only an average image quality at 8X10.

I've got an old Toshiba 2.3 view cam that takes about as good an 8x10 as my Pentax DSLR. It depends on the subject matter. I also have a 1.5 slim "spy cam" that is good to about 5x7 but tree leaves kinda look like bricks when viewed full screen on my 15" monitor. The more detail in a picture, the more resolution is needed. That is one of the reasons I still use my Miranda 35 for serious work.
