It's not quite that simple. A major General could be in charge of an entire infantry division of about twelve thousand personnel.
A regimental commander, usually a Brigadier General, or a full Bird Colonel, could have three to four thousand personnel.
A battalion commander, usually a Lieutenant Colonel or Major could have nine to twelve hundred personnel.
A company commander, usually a Captain, could have two to three hundred personnel.
A platoon commander, usually a 1st or 2nd Lieutenant, could have fifty to seventy five personnel.
A squad leader, usually a Corporal or Sergeant, will have eight people assigned to him.

It depeds on what their rank and position is...
US Army:
>2nd & 1st Liutenants are usually Platoon Leaders. An infantry platoon is usually made up of 36 soldiers (4, 9 man squads in the perfect situation).
>Captain will be the Company Commander. The company element consists of four to six platoons. Usually about 140-160 soldiers, but that really depends on how their TOE is set up and their unit manning strength.
>Major is usually not in a command position. They will most likely serve as the Battalion Executive Officer or have a job on the Brigade staff. I have seen cases where majors have commanded training units.
>Lt. Colonel usually commands a Battalion. This can amount anywhere from 300 to 600 troops or more. They might also serve as a Brigade Executive Officer.
>Colonel usually commands a Brigade which will consist of 3,000 or more soldiers.
Not many people makit higher than that.
Marine Corps I believe is similar, but I have no experience there.

That depends on his grade. The Chief of Staff has the entire army serving under him.
