Swimming, except for the butterfly stroke, is fairly easy on the knees. Walking and bicycling are good exercises for bad knees because they aren’t high-impact. If you belong to a gym, the elliptical machine is another good option; the machine has pedals instead of a flat, treadmill-like surface and allows you to simulate running and walking without the impact on the joints. Any activity where there’s a reduced impact or no quick direction changes is a good choice for bad knees.

What causes knee pain?
Severe knee pain is generally not from overuse, but from a sudden injury - often sustained during quick weight shifts and direction changes, or upon landing from a jump. A frequent victim in these cases is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), one of the fibrous bands that connects the thighbone to the shinbone. ACL tears are serious and may require surgical repair.

First, you should really go and see an orthopedic doctor to find out what is causing your pain. I am a therapist and I also have knee pain. I found out what caused mine is not at all what I thought it was.

You really need to have it diagnosed and then get the proper treatment from there. It could be something simple as needing strengthening, but you really should find out for sure first.

You may also need to wear a specific brace to help, but again, you need to find out the cause of the pain. Best wishes to you.

an eliptical trainer is perfect for you. it is a zero impact cardio machine. Zero impact means that your feet never leave the pedals. Also, have you asked your doctor about your knee pain? you may need to start a glucosamine regiment along with Aleve or IB prophin. Look for a joint supplement and ask your pharm or doc! the more you move the better it will get!

Stop by a hospital rehab center and speak to a physical therapist. They gave me a flyer that shows all the exercises I needed to do to improve my bad knees.
Did they work? H*ll no! I still need total knee replacement and will schedule it for the summer.

lightweight leg extensions and swimming. Those are low impact/stress activities which are good for joint/muscle development. Before you train though do some warmups , mainly by rotating your lower leg while keeping your upper upright and still. Grab your knee caps and gently rotate. Then roll your feet on the ball of the foot gently clockwise and reverse (for all exercises really).

You should not put too much strain on your knees, but do light leg exercises first, such as cycling before you move on to harder exercise such as jogging.
If pain continues during exercise, you might want to try out Glucosamine supplements, as they relieve joint pain.

try to find a pool. water exercises will be good. Also you may want to try an elliptical-just make sure you go both backwards and forwards to reduce pressure.
