HIS HEART.
no offense, but how can you say he's "pretty healthy," when he is a smoker, and was drinking heavily for 6 months and possibly doing drugs?

tell him to see a doctor.

It is unlikley that you could hear his heart that loudly, espically over loud snoring it would be nearly impossible. most likley it is his lungs, or movment of an anatomical structure in his chest as a result of his breathing. It may only happen when he is laying down also due to the structure of the thoracic cavity. Have him see a doctor, and have him take deep breaths while lying down awake, try to localize the sound. I would be willing to bet a lot of money that it is not his heart. Your heart sounds are very fain and difficult to hear even with a stethascope (unless its a very good one).

Xanax is a short acting benzodiazepine. Withdrawal symptoms from benzodiazepines like xanax can cause changes in the heart. His xanax may be wearing off and his heart rate is increasing as a result of withdrawal symptoms from short acting xanax. See this page for information on benzodiazepines such as xanax http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/
It could also just be just your husband's natural bodily functions. You may also want to run it by your doctor just to be completely sure there is nothing wrong with him.

Encourage your boyfriend to get a check up, but then leave it alone. You can push, shove, argue and nag, but if he doesn't want to go, you can only hurt yourself by continuing to dog him. If he doesn't choose to go to the doctor on his own, you will only turn yourself into a mothering, smothering old nag he can't stand. Then he will resist your efforts even more than before.
Did you notice that you are the one asking the question? He's not on line with his concerns -you are.

If his heart is thumping so loud to the point where you can hear it, then it is probably due to drug usage and the heavy drinking. When he stops all of that nonsense, maybe his heart will slow down and he'll continue to live!!!!!!
