Today I opened my mail and there was a package and it was the wrong apartment number. It was for the apartment over. I still opened it and there were four cards each in their own envelope (not licked shut just folded in). I opened them and in each there was $5. I kept the money and my bf and I just bought some beer. Am I a bad person???

Ok well let me clarify. I am feeling really bad right now...bad enough to think twice about it and ask on here. I opened the small package because I assumed it was mine, since all the mail that has ever been in my mailbox has always been addressed to me..so I didn't intentionally open the outer package knowing it wasn't mine. And I didn't have to go to the length of opening the other cards but they weren't closed...maybe I thought there might be money.. But immediately I felt guilty after. I think I am going to put them back and explain to my neighbor what happened. It started out as an honest mistake. But my boyfriend totally made me feel like it was okay. I am going to fix it.

For opening the package, no, that's not bad... I generally assume the postal employees know what they're doing too and I don't check the address on each envelop or package... even though every once in a great while there'll be something in there delivered to the wrong address... that's just carelessness but not bad, and most of the carelessness is on account of the post office. I can even understand a small peek into the cards if they were not sealed once the package is open; curitosity may not be entirely good manners & etiquette, but it's not a serious offense either.

However taking the money out and keeping it is low and nasty. I'd never even consider taking money from anyone, regardless of the amount or how much need I was in. It's theft, plain and simple.

First of all you committed a felony. Theft of governmental services which you can be prosecuted by the FBI. You cannot tamper, open, steal anyone's property even if it was sent to your box. Anyone that can steal someone else's cards with money enclosed if pretty low. Expecially buying booze with the money. Mail can be traced from the point that it left until the point of delivery. Hope you enjoy your beer for now.

Well, opening someone else's mail, and stealing the contents is a federal crime, you could do jail time in a federal facility, if someone find's out what you did. Better hope they do not.
If the intended recipient knows the box was coming, they can ask the local postmaster to put a tracer on it. One thing they do is ask the mail carrier if he remembers delivering the box, and which place. If he remembers he delivered it to you, lord help you.
I won't judge you, but the feds sure will.

OMG! OF course , how can you even think about it? First you open someone's mail which is illegal and then you steal the 20 bucks in it, and spend it on beer? That is a low as it gets. If you have the sense to please go to that neighbor whose mail it was and return it, and the 20 bucks. ALSO apologize for what you did, they may get REALLY REALLY Mad BUT you apoligized. Which after commiting the mistake IS good thing to do. I WARN YOU WHATEVER HAPPENS AFTER SAYING YOUR SORRY CANT BE CONTROLED. but if you stole sorry thats just karma

Yes. Taking and keeping the money was wrong. It was unlawful and dishonest. But, you are NOT a bad person because you care enough to make the situation right. Go to your neighbor and confess everything. You'll earn respect for your honesty. Learn from this mistake and move onto making better choices.

I have opened the wrong mail by accident too, that been said you shouldn't have kept the money. Besides being illegal, think about the people who the money was going to, it could have been grandchildren waiting for money from their grandmother to buy easter chocolate.
I would say yes you are a bad person.

Just selfish. What if that money was for a birthday. Regardless, you should put the 4- $5 bills in another card and put it under her or his door. Especially if a little kid was waiting for that surprise, probably from a grandparent. They are usually old-fashioned and give small bills. Just Do It!!!

I think everyone else is being way too harsh. It was a bad to do but that don't mean you are a bad person it just meant you made a mistake.Besides you are sorry for it now. Just do what you think you should do. I read your previous questions and I think your life is just in a slump right now. Just believe in Jesus and live right and your life will turn around. God Bless.

are you kidding me? you just opened your neighbors mail- which is illegal- and then you stole the money inside all four of the cards. and you really need to ask if that was bad. not only was that a bad thing to do you seem to be pretty stupid too. grow up. if you cant afford your own beer get over it and dont drink it.

That is a shameful thing to do. You think you were entitled to the money because you found it? Or because the person who sent it didn't lick the envelope shut?
The money wasn't meant for you and you knew it and yet you took it. It's despicable.
