I'm a Catholic... but at the same time I think that it is important to be aware of other peoples' veiwpoints. So, if it is not too much trouble for atheists if they could explain their beliefs to me (I am sure they are quite varied, though), and perhaps direct me to a few informative websites.

Thank you!

PS: Please, let's not have this question turn into a debate between religious and non-religious... Right now I merely am seeking understanding of the atheist world view, not questioning its validity.

Again, already? You last asked ~8 minutes ago!

There is *no* evidence for *any* supernatural all, and God is the penultimate unbelievable supernatural entity.
It makes more sense to believe in Santa (Norad sightings, movies, etc.) than it does any God.
And why *your* God, as opposed to the thousands upon thousands of other Gods?

You ask for a crash course. Now let's assume you really want to become one.
There is one thing you must do before thinking about anything else:
Accept that there are questions about life, the world etc. that will never be answered.
after you have accepted this, look at the world as objective as possible. Try to find out what is true and what is not true, what others tell you. A hard thing to do is to view your own world from a distance. One thing that was an eye-opener for me was the following:"If all religions in the world claim to have the truth, then the most logical thing would be that none of them are right"
I'm sure a search engine can come up with some good websites for you. Personally, I don't care too much for the theist-atheist battles that are going on. Reading the nonsense written by christians attacking science or atheism can be enlightening though.

I can only speak for myself. I see so many problems in the world, hunger, poverty, war, intolerance, injustice, and yet I see so many people more worried about their souls than anylthing else.

I'd like to believe in life after death. I'd love to believe that the good will be rewarded and the wicked punished. I'd like to know that no matter what, I am loved.

But the reality of it is completely different, and I think I would be foolish not to face reality. There is no evidence for God or the afterlife or any other religious dogma.

If we want to make the world a better place, its up to us. Life is all we have, and I think its plenty. We owe it to our fellow humans to make Life as good as we can for everyone. Religion can be a distraction from this, as well as a major source of hatred and intolerance. I can't help but think that we'd all be better off without it.

Atheism entails the absence of belief in the existence of God or other deities

It is contrasted with theism, the belief in one or more gods.
The term originated as a pejorative applied to anyone thought to be "godless" or believe in false gods; this included those having opinions that stood in conflict with the established religions. Monotheistic views were deemed atheistic by polytheistic believers; early Christians, for example, were persecuted as atheists by authorities of the Roman Empire. Today, the term "atheist" is used less disparagingly and with a more limited scope.

The only thing you need to know about atheism is that it means no god. It's simply the lack of belief in any, or a particular god. People who fall under the umbrella of atheism vary too greatly to even be viewed as a single group aside from the whole not believing in gods thing.

its a hard thing to understand atheism. It is pretty much when one decides to not believe in ANY higher power. to an atheist life was created by scientific circumstances and we evolved. I am somewhat athiest. I have large doubts about religion. My belief is that I will live my life as great as I can and as right as i can. and in the end whatever happens......... happens. Living a full wonderful life should be enough to get into any pastlife if there is any.

topazelf,
You know how you don't believe in zeus, ahura mazda, ra, or Mithra? Well, I agree with you. I don't believe in them for the same reasons you don't....and I don't believe in your god for those same reasons too.
