Right up my alley... I am a chaplain at an alcohol and drug treatment center. The Bible makes is clear that an idol is anything that takes the place of God in our lives. Not all idols are made of wood, stone, or metal. Some idols come in bottles and plastic bags. When an addiction takes the central place in a person's life, everything else gets brushed aside... our relationship with God, our family, our careers, everything. Addictions destroy lives, but the will of God is for us to have life and have it more abundantly. It comes down to making a choice of whom we will serve.

Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 1 Corinthians 7:23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. People today are slaves to sin until they commit their lives to Christ, no alone can conqueror sin's power. Galatians 4:3-7 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou are no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. addictions is sin. Because addictions control our lives, and not God. We can become slaves to sin.

If anything, such as an addiction, takes on more importance than God, it needs to be removed. That's what God says.
