My molar cracked and the gum is visible so it is going to take longer for the procedure? Also, what part of the procedure hurts? Can you guys go more in depth of the numbing of ur nerves and how much it hurts. Plus, i had my cavity a long time and i dont know if it is going to hurt more if i had it done when my cavity was small?

ouch! Sounds like you must be in pain already. Good news it, once its all fixed you should feel a lot better. My experience at the dentist - and I am always nervous its going to hurt - is that once the first needle goes in for the anasthetic I realy can't feel anything after that. And I believe thats how it should be. The anasthetic should numb you completely so you can't feel anything and if you can feel pain - tell the dentist so he can give you another shot. If having a lot of work done you may feel some pressure when they are cleaning out the muck but thats it. Hope your experience goes well. good luck!

I've never had a Root Canal but my mom has and she said after the medicine started wearing off it was extremely tender and sore for about two days. She had a hard time talking normal for a few hours afterwards because of the pain as well. I think the way they numb you for a Root Canal is by injecting anesthesia through the gums. I believe a Root Canal would feel the same no matter how progressed a cavity is. I'm positive though you will feel much better after the procedure. I hope this helps you! Good luck!

I've had two root canals. They were done by different dentists. One I had no pain and the other one hurt for 2 weeks after.
The numbing is no different than for an ordinary filling except they give you more and in more spots (as far as I remember).
With my second one they hit a nerve and I had pain go thru my tongue and down to my toes. That hurt. But other than that it didn't hurt until the pain meds wore off. I actually went back to work for the afternoon. By quitting time the pain was there.

If you've had the cavity for a long time and it's cracked than you are in a great deal of pain now. Having a root canal and the pain of recovery is preferable, in my opinion, than the pain of a bad tooth.

The worst part for me (and I've had 7 root canals...) is the shot(s) to numb the area... these areas can continue to hurt once the novocaine wears off, but that is usually controllable with just ibuprofen. If the tooth had an abscess that caused swelling and inflammation, the area might hurt for a day or two after the root canal. You might even need a heavier pain med like Tylenol #3 or Vicodin if it is nasty (two of mine needed help beyond ibuprofen). All-in-all thay are not as bad their reputation makes them out to be.

By and large, a filling hurts less if fixed when small since you stay away from the nerve. Large caviities that have reached down to near the nerve may cause significantly more pain than smaller, shallow ones... but again, the most pain is usually at the injection site after the numbing agent wears off, and ibuprofen is usually enough to cover it well...

And just in case you think you might just skip the shot and save the injection site pain... well, I did that once and will NEVER NEVER do it again... the injection site pain is way less than the pain of even a small drilling without being numbed!!!!!!!!

I have always had to have extra Novocaine shots for any dental work I have had done. Just don't be afraid to tell your dentist that your mouth is not numb enough. I had a root canal recently (my first), because I waited way too long to get a filling replaced after it fell out. I was in pain from that for at least 8 months if not a year before I finally got enough courage to go to a dentist. You just need to have a dentist you can be comfortable with, and if your still worried about the pain ask if they can use nitrous oxide (laughing gas). I had it during my root canal and I can't remember feeling anything (for the first time ever). If you don't already have a reliable dentist, 1-800-dentist really does have good ones to refer you to. Good luck, and just remember that whatever pain you have now will get worse if you don't get it taken care of.

The worst part about any dental procedure is the first part--which is the numbing part. Ask your dentist if he/she can RUB some anesthetic on your gums first (that takes the edge off a little for the needle). The numbing requires shooting some lidocaine into areas of your mouth where the nerves come down to innervate your teeth. That will hurt like a mo-fo. Have something to grab onto. It will feel like a mix between pressure and a hot knife. Whatever you do, don't move though. After that, the medicine starts to kick in and you don't feel jack-shi--. You might feel him/her move your jaw around or an occasional pressure, but it's nothing.

if you go to a root canal specialist they do it all in one day but a regular dentist will open it let it drain then go back in and re dig out the tissue and all that time ur jaw hurts from the needles going in and infection to drain out and keeping the cotton in it to keep it clean etc so hopefully u will go in one shot.. there fore if u do u will only feel the needle injection sight soreness. They take out root in one shot pay about 900 bux and be done with it then ya have to get a titanium post to have a crown over that after wards.. and they take an xray after the root is gone to know its all clear of decay and infection . you will be on antibiotics. crown usually costs 700 - 1200 but saves the space of ur tooth so ur jaw wont be become misaligned and put pressure on other teeth when u bite. if u dont opt for a crown then just have tooth pulled. but if u have space there ur bite will pout pressure on the whole jaw and make other teeth weak.. eventually.

they basically are twisting the nerves, tissue and yanking them and scrapping them out to cut off the life to the tooth; unfortunately, they are so root canal happy for cash that the dead tooth , costs a fortune for a crown which eventually breaks with the remainder of the tooth which is now dead due to the root canal leading to the loss of the tooth anyway , down the road; been there and done that ; that is why I am so versed in this now ; 3rd time is a charm , not ; everything should be done and discussed to not deaden the tooth via root canal; once the nerves are out the tooth is dead and no life nor strength remains

just tell the dentist you don't want to feel anything. I had 2 root canals. They pretty much grind down your tooth until the 4 root canals are exposed then they take a little pin thingy & spin in around in the canal to grab th exposed nerve & yank it out. So after the pain keiilers wear off you shouldn't feel anything in the tooth.

cutting-component dental surgical treatment does not quite harm. that's uncomfortable, yet hardly will you go through any important quantity of soreness in case you stick to all instructions given to you by the dentist. you could in all probability take a pair of soreness killers as quickly as you're arranged to drink beverages after the surgical treatment, because of fact as quickly as the numbing effect wears off, you could experience soreness for about a minutes (i at the instant had an extraction and this is exactly what took place to me--have confidence me, do no longer take the possibility, only take the pills). Root canals do no longer interfere into the tissues of the mouth the way extractions do, so which you're no longer likely to experience lots, if any, soreness. At worst you may have minor soreness localized in that one tooth, yet you will finally end up extremely able to shifting on alongside with your existence only approximately as though no longer something took place. only verify to get a suited crown performed interior of a few weeks. in case you do no longer, your tooth might actually fall apart interior your mouth.
