I'm a proud 'Recovering Catholic'. Why be part of an organization that's made it abundantly clear it wants no part of me? I'm still very spiritual and maintain a relationship with God, even though I'm gay ... just not within the confines of organized religion. Organized religion should be banned outright ... it interferes with tolerance and democracy.

So in short, I'm not turned off by God at all, just the organizations that use his good name for the purposes of control and segregation.

It seems that I was always turned on to religion, and nothing has turned me off yet. I was raised in a devoutly religious family. As a tiny child, I was captivated by the candles, incense, art and classical music. Later, I began getting interested in what my religion taught and stood for. Soon enough, I began getting interested in what other people believed, too. If anything turns me off, it's unthinking dogmatism and blind adherence to leaders, but fortunately, one can apply a certain amount of rationalism to their spiritual life.

Once I saw, felt, and experienced the power of the Holy Spirit, I was convinced that God is real. And I am as skeptical as they come. But I knew it was real.

What turned me off was just the whole not-thinking-for-myself part.
