The major thing is to stay within your budget and not let emotions get the upper hand. Decide the date and then the facility, based on the number of guests you want and can afford. Book the facility. Pick your minister and the two of you ask him/her to officiate. Decide reception issues and book the reception. Reception issues are what you serve or not serve. A sitdown meal or buffet adds to the cost, so maybe just a DJ and short reception with a toast and cutting the cake. Once all these are in place with reservations confirms (remember you will need to give non-refundable deposits, order your cake and flowers,, which can add tremendously to the cost.
This is both of yours wedding so all decisions should be made together. Also decide what the groom and his party will wear. The bride then independently picks out her dress and what her maid of honor, etc., will wear.
Here are the sticky issues that should be decided in the budgeting process. Who is playing for the wedding, etc.? If the bride's parent can they may help but if the bride does not live at home then her parents have NO obligation to fork out the dow. If they are paying, then they pay for the wedding, the bride's dresses, and flowers for everyone but the bride (his parents do that). The groom's parents, if he lives at home or desire to help, pay for the brides bouquet, the dinner traditional after the wedding rehersal (the day/night before), and the honeymoon.
The outfits worn by all males and the attendants to the bride today are usually paid for by the people themselves; these are usually rented.. The bride and her attendants should sit down and talk, then decide what dresses they were and can afford. Good idea is to pick a nice dress that can be used for other parties in the future.
Know that wedding dresses can be very expensive but since the bride will only wear it the once day, wedding and reception, look at all avenues. I found a beautiful wedding dress at JC Penny's after a bridal show, one my mother could not have made for the same price. Oh, and I rented my head piece/vail.
As you see each of these items adds more and more cost to the wedding. The planning should be fun though it is very stressful.
Give yourself time to plan, lots of time and lots of discussion. And realize you may not get the wedding hall or recpetion hall the exact date you want.
Congratulations!

There is much work that goes into a wedding, I am planning mine right now- its in 3 weeks. The best piece of advice I Can give you is - give yourself at least a year to plan. I started planning mine with only7 months and that was not nearly enough time. Trust me on this - at least a year - or else life will become very hectic.
You will then need to set a budget and stick with it.
Decide on a theme and wedding colors ( all depending on the month you choose).
Then decide on basics like wedding dress, cake, caterer, bridesmaids dresses, tuxedos, favors, invitations, church, reception hall, decorations, limo service and all that stuff.
To plan a really nice wedding just take you time with it, make sure you choose exactly what you and your soon to be husband like. Attend some bridal shows, do lots of research on line.
Here is a website that will tell you everything about weddings www.theknot.com
I wish you the best of luck !!!!

I want to be married at the end of it. I want to keep the parts of my family and his family separate as much as possible- they don't really get along. I want to be able to look back and smile. Everything else is just fluff.
