Most of the local community high schools are bad. Try and get into a magnet high school.
If you can't, you might be better off at a private.
Here's a link to the ranking of the high schools based off of a state exam. http://www.suntimes.com/pcds/html/stng/hs/isat/top50hs.html

You have heard correctly, some are good, some bad. I live in Chicago, born and raised. I recently moved my family of 5 just to be in a better public school district because the Private school tuition is so expensive and the public grade school in my area is ranked 14th in the state. Try going on Greatschools.com and you can get some really helpful info on local school. Also look up your new address on www.cps.k12.il.us to find your public school district. good luck

if your a really smart person go to lane tech on western and addison. that is a huge school with many oppurtunities but u gota be pretty smart. Loyala is a a great private school also. but there arent a great amount of well known private schools. The most academic school is probably northside prep. heres a list of some bad schools Sulivin, Senn, Mather, Ominson, Taft. thats just a few. Marshall aint great. Your best bet is Lane Tech.
