Hello,

I'm planning to go on vacation to Sardinia in late July, early August, but I'm afraid it may be too crowded with tourists. Is it really crowded or just busy? Are there calmer parts in the island?
I'm planning to rent a car, so moving around shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks

Yes, all the Sardinia is very crowded in July and August.
Situation is absolutely crazy on the Smerald Coast (Costa Smeralda) in the North-east side, where it's a real problem to move even by bike or motorbike. Forget the car there unless it's 5-6 am. In resorts like Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo or Baia Sardinia it's absolutely not possible but you might meet with the same problem everywhere on that side of the island. On the contrary the North-West and the West side are calmer (but not at all ...empty !!). Also the area of the South
(either West- East or straight south) is rather crowded but not at the extreme level of the Smerald Coast.
Moving by car there it would be ok but don't expect to cover big distances by day since mostly of the routes are narrow and with sharp bends.

It will be busy but if you go inland or to more out of the way beaches you should be fine. The Costa Smeralda in the north gets the most crowded. I have put together a list of great lesser known beaches for you to visit. http://www.my-italy-piedmont-marche-and-more.com/best-beach-in-sardinia.html
