Many people will head down to the local office of the banks or credit card companies when they want to apply for a credit card. If there is a long queue, they will have to wait in line for their turn to submit their applications. Alternatively, they can call up their customer service hotlines and request for an application form to be mail to their home addresses.
As more and more households have access to the Internet, the banks and credit card companies begin to offer online credit card applications. This method allows the banks and credit card companies to reach a broader base of potential customers, especially the younger generation that is more computer savvy. get more information about it at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/article/150,The_3_Main_Advantages_of_Online_Credit_Card_Application

I'm not sure whether you're asking whether it's good to have credit cards, or whether you're asking what kinds of perks credit cards might offer you.
For most people, credit cards can be a good thing, especially if you always pay your full balance (not the minimum payment) on time. That allows you to build a credit history for when you might need it to buy a home, for example, without any cost to you. However, if you overspend because you have credit cards and carry a balance month to month, then cards are costing you hard-earned money and aren't so good. And, if easy credit allows you to get in over your head, then credit cards are just plain bad for you.
Now, about the perks. Practically every merchant, bank, business offers their own cards. These cards are issued by a few companies, but carry the logo of practically anybody. Depending on the affiliation of the card company, you can get money off your first purchase (Amazon), get free shipping and monograms for life (LL Bean), get airline miles (Delta, United cards), get cash back (Discover), special sales for cardholders (Macy's, Kohl's) and on and on. If you often shop someplace, and the perk is attractive, then there's nothing wrong with selecting a card with perks. That's assuming that credit cards are good for you--see paragraph above!

If you pay the balance off every month (and that's a big if), different credit cards have different benefits. Some give you many frequent flyer miles just for getting the card, some give a certain percentage of money back to you. Some will cover the insurance on a rental car so you don't have to get it.
Best bet is to have them draw the money directly out of your checking account each month so you never have a late payment and you keep your money until the last possible day.

credit cards, when used properly, help to build your credit. Using them properly means paying them off, or close to it, every month, don't go over the limit. Creditors like to see that you are responsible about borrowing money and getting a credit card, and using it properly will show them that. It will also boost up your credit score.

You get all the benefits with a DEBIT card. The main difference is, you can't get in debt with a debit card.
