I definitely noticed. I didn't sweat it,-- but I definitely noticed.
It's obvious that too many people like to seem unaffected and above everything. So when someone says "Thanks!" They say, "Uh-huh," which translates to, "Yeah, I'm great, but whatever."
It's a nasty Americanism, and it's becoming more popular. I'll even confess that I use the occasional "uh-huh" in reply to a "thanks," but honestly--only if I'm purposefully choosing to emotionally dismiss the person who said "thank you." (e.g. a biitchy co-worker). But a smile, and a warm "you're welcome, honey" usually goes to everybody else,--even strangers.
And it's funny but you'll notice, nobody EVER gives the overly casual "uh huh" reply to even the most half-hearted "thanks" from their boss...

I think it is just lack of manners. I guess its more than words though. What kind of facial expression is there? If there is a smile and uh huh, then I believe it's OK, but if there is no smile I believe it's bad manners. Body Language is a important factor when trying to interpret what someone really means.

IMO: "uh huh" may simply be an acknowledgment of the thanks.
Which is worse: not acknowledging the comment or lying to someone?
In fact, this may even be a step in the right direction!
Rather than saying "you're welcome" when you really aren't, isn't it better to say:
Uh-huh
Sure
Right
No problem
or use some other non-committal response that acknowledges the "thank your" rather than lying through your teeth about it?

i'm not sure i connect "uh huh" and "my bad". slang isn't a new trend, it's been around as long as people have been communicating.

I take it as an acknowledgment of me saying thank you. Nothing more.
I say "no problem' myself.......lol. If you want a reason why, I guess it's because I feel the thank you is given with a sound of indebtedness attached. Like they are saying thank you, I owe you for your kindness. My response is that I was glad to do what I did, and there is no indebtedness involved.
.......no problem.

to me it seems that if i say thank you to stranger they reply "your welcome" but if i say thank you to a friend they reply "uh huh"...
but thinking about it now.........- i work at tim hortons and everytime you hand someone their beverage they say thank you. and i just realized now that i hardly do say your welcome.. maybe because i would say it so much that it would lose meaning.. i guess i just say your welcome to the people i know.hmmm. thanks for bringing that up!!

People are becoming lazy about being polite, which in turn makes them rude.
