Dear space,
I always try to tell people that you cannot take one Bible verse alone and come to a right conclusion. The majority of people on Y/A Religion give me that same Bible verse that the Lord will come as a thief in the night. However, they are not reading 'everything' the Bible states on the subject.
Please consider the passage in Luke 17:26-30 where God tells us that as it was in the days of Noah, it shall be when Christ returns. That is God told Noah EXACTLY when the flood was going to hit and also told him that it was going to be a worldwide flood! When Christ returns visually, the Bible tells us that it will be the END of the world (2 Peter 3:1-13. God even tells us that the world will be destroyed by fire!
Again in Luke 17 the Lord likens His coming as to the events surrounding the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Lord took Lot and his 2 daughters out of the city before He destroyed it with fire. Lot and his 2 daughters were born-again believers.
And as I mentioned previously many people in Y/A Religion use 1 verse to support their belief. You have to study the whole Bible on that subject to come to truth. Let us go back to where they take the verse of "thief in the night" found in 1 Thessalonians 5:1-7. Starting in verse 4 we read, "But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness." The Lord is making a distinction here between 2 groups of people here. The majority of the world is in darkness (blinded)-they are not born-again. They may be religious and even read the Bible but they are not saved! Remember the religious leaders of Jesus' day wanted to kill Him. They were recognized as religious leaders but they hated Jesus!
The other group is also mentioned here in 1 Thessalonians 5 and they are the children of the day. They are born-again believers (saved). They love God and keep His commandments (John 14:15, 21; 1 John 2:3, 4).
From everything that the Bible tells us thus far (keep studying the Scriptures), it appears that 2011 may be the year of Christ's return and the end of the world. Did you know that 2011 is exactly 7000 years after the flood of Noah's day? The flood occurred in 4990 B.C. (the math is correct).
I hope this will help you.

He also says that know one but the Father knows when it will happen. Jesus even told a couple of parables on this subject. Doesn't matter how specific you try to be, the bottom line is that the time will come "like a thief in the night." No one can know.

Yes, that was the rationale behind the predictions for the failed raptures of 1988, 1991 & 1994. It doesn't seem to have worked, but if people keep guessing I suppose they're bound to get it right one of these weeks/months/years.

It's not the exact wording that we need to be considering, but rather the content/meaning. Most Christians that I know (including myself) believe that Jesus simply means that no person, human or angel, can know the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

It's a recent discovery. All Christians must give up watches and calendars.
Makes us very unpopular in the work place. We never know exactly when to show up.

He didn't speak it because they didn't speak in those terms back then. I believe his intention was to communicate that no one would know period. No, not the month nor the year, nor the millennium.
