It's a short form of : 'Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm".
That translates as : "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews".
It's the inscription that Pilate placed over Christ's head on the cross.
It was thought to have been written in Latin (above), Greek, and Hebrew.
The site below seems pretty good. Ask your priest if he thinks it's good.

INRI= Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm (Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews).
John 19:19–20:
And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

i.n.r.i - accronym for our translation to:
Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews
it was done kind of as a slam to Him. you see they were poking fun at Him becuase they didn't realize that through Jesus death on the Cross - He opened the heavens for us all!
