I CAN'T SAY THAT ALI WAS THAT VIRTUOUS. BUT HIS HIGH MORAL GROUND/STAND AGAINST WAR AND THE INEQUITIES OF AMERICAN SOCIETY PUTS HIM RIGHT UP THERE WITH JACKIE ROBINSON.

Joe Louis was much more humble and virtuous. He honorably served his country in the United States Army while Ali refused. Louis gave to various charities and even gave entire fight purses to them accepting no payment. He gave so much that he lived a life of poverty having to come out of retirement to try and earn money to pay back the government the taxes on some of those fight cards that he gave his money to charities as he did not know he was still charged taxes on them. He did much to break down racial barriers and pave a way for fighters like Ali. Ali was an unfaithful husband and involved himself with a lot of crooked things as shown in his movie, which he himself approved. He was a great fighter but not a moral example.

I'd have to say Rocky Marciano quitting at 48 - 0 with a couple good fights still available to him was about as graceful an exit a fighter could make from the sport.

In modern history I'd give Marvin Hagler's exit the nod, but it's tough to leave boxing under better circumstances than Marciano did.

It depends on how you define virtues and morals.
