That's funny because I know the Chopahn Restaurant in Sandiego has gotten rich off of me in tips alone! Actually, I have this little game I like to play when tipping. I'll usually bring like 30 dollars in one dollar denominations. Depending upon the size of the tip, I'll place a dollar bill so that it's half sticking out under every plate and wine glass. The waiters and waitresses love it. :) Comments?

The reason why I brought this up, is because I've heard it said before. It's a stereotype. Oh, and by the way? I'm very much black. :)

Have you every done this one. Leave money on the table and depending on service take or add to the pile? I usually tip very well because it the right thing to do

You would not BELIEVE the amount profiling that waiters go through in the kitchen. Age, number of people, family or no, race, dress, etc. Speaking from my personal experience, the average black guy did not tip as well as the average white guy, but did tip better than the average white woman
But the best tip I ever got was from a pair of black guys that another waiter made me pick up because he thought they'd tip for crap - he wanted to wait on the five top that just walked in. The large party totally stiffed him on the tip (all white for what it's worth) and I had a good time waving that hundred dollar bill in his face. The two black guys knew exactly what had happened and why. They even called me out from the kitchen to make sure my 'friend' did not get any of the tip.
So I never, ever give anything less than my best service, because you never know . . .

As a bartender. I can say that this is most true. I bartend in Dayton beach...We just finished a special event that we have every year called Black college reunion Or "freak nick " from way back in the day.. Every year this comes around and every bartender dreads it. Last year myself and another bartender rang in an average of $7000 on our 10 hour night shift..We both walked with less then $70 each. This year the event was a little slower and we did $5500 and walked with $100 each. On an average night I will walk with 20% of my sales not 1-4%. What gets me though is that blacks and white trash are always asking me to "Hook it up" but never want to reciprocate. Throwing me a dollar on a $30 tab is not worth it for me. Its not just blacks that don't tip its Europeans, people from Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mexicans(True Mexicans not people that were born and raised in the states).
As i close keep in mind not everybody falls into their race's stereotype. But stereotypes do have some truth behind them.

Silliness.
My aunt once gave a $40.00 tip to a very nice young lady. She gives $20.00 on occassion and I've never seen her tip less than $10.00.
I tip, but not quite as high as she does because I'm a full-time college student and I don't have as much money to give $10.00 tips everytime I go out!
It is a stereotype that blacks are rude and don't tip. I can even tell that some waiters and waitresses treat me and my friends differently because they assume we aren't going to tip them. People need to stop assuming things and treat people equally, especially in places of business.

Well, I am very much white. And guess what? I agree with you! I have heard the stereotype before, and it is totally bogus. That said, your personal anecdote does not disprove the stereotype, as you could theoretically be an exception to the rule. It would be nice to see someone do a study on the subject. There are a lot of stereotypes out there regarding who tips well and who doesn't. I'm willing to bet that most of them do not hold water, outside of a few unsubstantiated and isolated anecdotes.

I was a cab driver for 4 years in Colorado springs, and while it is true that some black people did tip me, the majority of my black fares did not tip (unless you call 20cents a tip). Typical excuse, "I normally tip, but I ain't got it right now".

People like to apply stereotypes to a whole group with one instance or example. So a black, brown, whatever person did not leave a tip once, they apply it all people of that color.

I like to play a little game too. If you expect a bad tip cause I'm black and subsequently give me poor service, I report you to your manager and you pay for my next meal ;)
If you give me great service, I'll give you as much as 30% of the bill (when I have it to spare).
