Honestly most cold medication really doesn't work great. The only other things I can suggest to maybe help a little, is keep your heat on the lower side, run a humidifier, if your child is in a bed, have her sleep on two pillows so she's more elevated - lying flat on their backs aggravates a cough. Also if she's old enough to reason with, try seeing if you can convince her to sleep on her side or stomach, and this helps as well. Lastly, before she goes to bed, try running the shower as hot as it will go and get teh bathroom all steamy, and sit there for 20 minutes, letting your child breathe in the steam.

I hope this helps!!

could be teething cough? is he/she cutting the `eye' teeth etc. like the others who answered it is best to the childs head up with pillow under mattress where they will be lying down. My son has been given Tixylix and to be honest have found the same thing at times. Is the cough in the chest/wheezy? May need yellow coloured antibiotic suspension from the doctor. Its a good idea to keep his bedroom room temperature (obviously) throughout the night and daytime give the rooms in the house a good airing as you leave them (leave the windows open for a while) whilst keeping where you are spending the most time with the child warm of course.

Saline nasal drops administered are good for runny noses. Please speak to a doctor though!

Sounds to me like an ear infection..does he/she wake up crying and holding their head or ear?? If the child has no other sypmtoms except for a fever maybe then it could be an ear infection. The cough is due to the runny nose dripping into the throat..this is called a post-nasle drip. Bring the tike to the docters and get them checked out. chances are ther will get some of that yummy bubblegum flavored medicine. omxicillian. hope this helped.

First of all, you should talk to a doctor, cause it could be many things. My son had night coughing fits and runny nose during the day, and he had acid reflux. Right now, my kids have allergies, so the doctor recommended Claritin for the runny nose and coughs. Allergies are bad this year all over the country. :(

I say Honey every time - completely natural and effective for the cough, soothing.
For the runny nose - teach him to blow into the tissue regularly - we made a game out of it and our little girl loves blowing her nose when she needs to.

My kids have had that too, and it really isin't a big deal. Give them a bath before bed and then let them play in the bathroom while you steam them for about 10 min. Afterwards put some vicks vapor on them and give them some Benadryl. That will help them sleep and you, and it will dry up there nose so they can breath better. Good luck! I hate it when my kids are sick.....

The coughs are from post nasal drip.

Elevate the head of the mattress. Give your child a nice steamy bath. Rub vicks vaperrub on his chest. Give him a DECONGESTANT, like children's sudafed, not a cough suppressent. This will help.

Actually, OTC cough suppressants don't even work. You need the stuff with codeine for them to really work.

ETA: You do not get pneumonia from vapor rub. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by a virus or bacteria. My peditrician even recommends it.
