Yes you should join it. It will help improve your flexibilty and confidence. Slef-esteem problems are partly to blame for the number of teenage women suffering from anorexia and bullemia. Teenage girls need help in whatever way to boost confidence and self-esteem, both directly related to self-worth. Not to mention in a society suffering from a obesity epidemic, exercise should be encouraged by parents. Also, gymnastics allows you to be part of a team, encouraging good sportsmanship, and building a comraderie with a team, allowing you a social network of kids that share the same values that you do.

Try that for helping convince your mom. Gymnastics was something I always wanted to do as a kid as well, but my mom wouldn't let me b/c she didn't want me to hurt myself. I regret it. If you are interested in it, keep trying to talk her into it. Avoid the part where you talk about that sports are proven to help keep a kid off drugs--it never works as well as you hoped. But yeah--don't recite it just like that. Do each part individually. Like Monday at dinner you talk about obesity in America (if you are American) and how its an epidemic. An episode on Dr Phil had a 2 yr old boy that weighed 225 lbs and social workers were going to take him from his home. The mother thought she was doing everything she could to help him too. Do some research on how there are more fat children today than 20 years ago and something must be done to stop it. Then mention how you'd love to have the opportunity to do gymnastics, to help make sure you live a healthy lifestyle.

Tues, mention the self-esteem issue. How many girls die each year from anorexia and how people blame the media for portraying women as merely beautiful creatures. Society values beauty and that causes women to develop low self-esteem.

Wed, the value of teams. There is tons of research that talks about how women that play sports are more likely to go on to college, more likely to hold a high-paying career, less likely to have anxiety over life decisions. Women that play sports are more likely to develop leadership skills necessary to succeed. Plus, it is a positive social network.
In fact, according to the Women's Sports Foundation, in 1972 one in 27 high school girls played varsity sports. In 2001, that number was one in 2.5.

Thurs, you can either mention sports at your school in general. Got any national championship teams at your school? conference champs? wanna talk about how cool jocks are or how you have a teacher that gives preferential treatment to the jocks? If not give it a rest tonight.

Friday--show up to dinner with a list of gymnastics places that you were thinking about. You should have lots of recommendations from friends and if you live close to one of those friends, you could mention carpooling with her.

Yes, of course, You should try. It's worth at least a try. You'll never know if you don't go!! In Gymnastics Instruction they will teach you how to work on becoming more flexible among the other skills that are used in the sport. It is a riskier sport regarding injuries than some, but with proper training and careful work, you should be able to enjoy Gymnastics. Afterwards, if you feel that you don't like the sport as much as you thought then you can always try something else.

I didn't start gymnastics until I was 15 years old. My mom kind of had a similar mindset as yours. But I tried something new, I took that chance. And I loved it!
I would say if you want to try gymnastics, you should absolutely go for it. If you find out you hate it, you can always quit. But if you never try, you'll never know. And who cares if you're not very flexible? Flexibility is definitely something you will work on and gain in gymnastics.
