These flashes last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. How often they occur varies from woman to woman. Women who have had a hysterectomy are more likely to have hot flashes. Many women experience most of their hot flashes in the first 2 years after menopause, and find that the hot flashes gradually lessen. However, some women have hot flashes for several years before menopause, and some have them for 10, 20, or even 40 years or longer after menopause.

Do you mean each one, or the whole thing? About two years overall, is an average. That's what my doctor told me. It's been longer than that for me, and I still have one occasionally, but not nearly as often as I used to. The individual flashes last a few seconds, up to a minute. A general feeling of being too warm is quite common, too. The best tip I have is to always have a bottle or glass of cold water and a handkerchief handy. I would break out in sweat along my hair line---the handkerchief was indispensable. And a drink of cool water seemed to be soothing. I never took any supplements or hormones.

There is a huge variability about how long women in perimenopause or menopause will experience hot flashes. But there are measures you can take to be more comfortable, including taking hormone replacement therapy to help through the roughest part. This does not mean you need to take hormones for life, though, and there are risks and benefits you should discuss with your doctor.
Many women find help in simple things like dressing in lighter clothing and using herbal helps and eating food rich in phytoestrogens, such as those with soy.
A great source of help and information is this website I found when I went through menopause several years back, and I suggest that you use it as well. They are named "Power Surge" as that is the term they use instead of "hot flash."

well im not sure but ive had 2 "bouts" with them. the 1st time i started taking black cohash and it took about a month (a miserable month!) for it to kick in and make them go away, but they went away completely. so after a while (maybe 6 mo) i quit the black co hash... and sure enough the hot flashes came back!!!! i started the black cohash again and im fine now, took about the same length of time for it to work. So i really dont know if they just come and go periodically or if the black cohash is working but i aint taking no chances this time! I m going to keep taking it. I dont want to do the hormones either and end up with worse problems!

They only affected me off and on about a year and mine were not bad at all and I did not know that's what they were until after it was over. I did take a Chinese medicine called dong kwai that I got in Chinatown in a bottle (awful tasting syrup) and I am certain that helped but you have to read up on it because it you have high blood pressure you cannot take it.

I did not take hormones because I already thought they were bad for you and some years later I was proven right.
