I know a friend of mine was not a member of the LDS church when she went to BYU, but was raised attending the church. She wasn't baptized as a kid, but later (in college) was baptized. She's very happy with her decision. But if you're already sure that you aren't going to convert, why go to BYU? There are lots of great universities that give a comperable education and you don't have to take religion classes in a religion you don't believe in. Just curious. No disrespect intended.

Maybe. I know that members get a discount. I've heard it 10%, but I'm not sure.

Wow, free ride scholarships to non-members? I haven't heard that one. Wonder if they still do it?

Nothing is wrong with getting a good, a great, education. I'm ALL for education. BYU, BYU-I, and BYU-H are all excellent schools.

My question was spurred by someone asking about a Mennonite community near Provo. She said she wasn't interested in becoming Mormon, but was interested in becoming a Mennonite, but went to school at BYU. So I'm just wondering why she, or anyone not LDS would go there in the first place (if they had the same feelings).

I know a Catholic guy who went because, at least at that time, they gave full tuition scholarships to people who were NOT LDS. That's quite an incentive.

When I went to BYU I knew a lot of non-LDS international students that came because of the great English learning center, and relatively cheap, highly accredited education they could get.

It's a pretty international-student-friendly school, aside from the English learning center, there's a whole administrative office for international students to help them with student visas, tutoring, and "translating" what their high school grades and test scores mean here.

Others come for specific programs: sports, the music-dance-theater, vehichle engineering (since it's near the salt flats), etc.

BYU is an excellent school and yet like you say there are other comparable schools. Unless they're giving you a free ride I don't imagine many non-Mormon parents like the idea of a 30000+ year education for Mormon indoctrination.

Having gone to BYU, I can tell you that it is a very good school, has an atmosphere very conducive to education (limited distractions from the party scene) and it has a great social environment with other students who share similar faith based values.
Why not go to BYU? It is a great school.

BYU's an excellent university! What's wrong with getting a good education?!

That's like saying white people who want to go to Mississippi Valley State, shouldn't go there because it's for black people only. Not cool.

My mother went...why, I'm not sure. I don't know what other Universities are around where she was in Utah, so I'm assuming it was the closest to her.

I actually applied to the one in Hawaii (hehe, because I wanted to live there,) but apparently, I didn't meet the criteria....big suprise there.

To play football.. Former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon (Irish and Catholic) is quoted as saying the best thing about Provo is seeing it in your rear view mirror.

I think perhaps she was wanting to be educated in another 'doctrine' ... it is always good to have more information about choices... even if you are already committed to another faith. perhaps she wanted that AND a good education?
