My cat brings me an assortment of wildlife, like birds, snakes, lizards,mice....eww.but anyway Ive heard 2 reasons that my cats do this.1-they want to bring me a gift or 2-they want a safe place to eat whatever they have.which is true, or what is a more possible reason?

My cat does not like collars period!Especially ones with bells on them.First he chews the bell off, then he wanders off and a day later, no collar!

The cat is training you. You seem to be unable to catch your own prey, so the cat is training you. As you improve your skills the prey will brought to you alive. Basically the cat is treating you as a kitten.

It is important you don't tell the cat off for this.

Cats are one of the few domesticated animals that still retain some of their wild instinct. In is instinct to hunt, and the reason for bringing the victims home is showing you respect, and accepting that you are the authoritative figure in their territory. They will also bring them so a safe place to eat them.

I read a wonderful book One Hundred Ways For A Cat To Train Its Human and I found this wonderful anecdote regarding hunting, "Real mice make for the best games of all. Bring them into the house and let them go under the bed. Then you can play with them later, during the night". This has no relevance but to your question it just made me laugh, and I thought it would give other people a chuckle as well.

they are showing you that they are very useful, my cat that I adopted because my neighbors moved out and abandoned her does it all the time, Pookie brings me mice and chipmunks and lays them by the back door constantly, I Praise her and give her a kitty treat ( which is now canned tuna). Cat who are abandoned are very insecure and need reassurance that they are wanted it took Pookie along time to become part of the family but she is now my constant companion . If your cats hunting is getting out of control though try putting a collar with a bell on them it will slow them down a bit and save what you don't want it to kill.

When I had an outdoor cat (don't do that anymore, cats strictly indoor) he would leave me a bird at the back door. They really do bring it as a gift -it's the only thing they can offer for you! If he wanted to eat it, he would have secreted it out somewhere in the backyard.

I think that both reasons are true. Your cat loves you and wants you to know how much he loves by giving you all of his precious gifts. Or your cat wants to eat in a more suitable area. For which ever reason it might be try to enjoy it know matter how disgusting it might be.

Both may be true. If he leaves it at the door & doesn't act like he wants to eat it, he is bringing you a gift. My cat does this & I have to praise him & pet him or he gets mad at me. He just wants you to know he loves you. If he wants a safe place to eat, he usually won't leave it lying around for you to find. It may be gross but that is their way of showing affection.

My understanding has always been that this is when cats are treating you like their kittens. Cats have to bring prey to their young to teach them how to hunt - and of course, take them on the hunt to teach them. You're presumably not going to go mousing with you cat, so she's trying to show you how to feed yourself the best way she can!!

This explanation makes more sense to me in behavioural terms than bringing 'gifts' - this sounds more like us putting a human trait onto animals to explain their behaviour. I doubt it's to do with them wanting a safe place to eat, since they always do have a safe place to eat their cat food!

#1 is true and the other reason is because cats are natural hunters. Cats will hunt even when they are well fed. There is nothing that you can do about it.

Cats bring you "things" because you are the leader of the pack/pride.

You get first choice.
