I not sure of statistics. I guess it does stem from if the parents smoke. I remember my mom and dad smoked when I was young and me and a friend (His parents smoked) got us a pack of Pall-Malls. Matches were free back then and we hid this in the old garage out back as no one ever go there. I not sure, but, was around 11 years old. It was a grown up thing for us. But, when we moved to another State I quit. I smoked off and on until I was about 28 and quit. I do smoke now and then if a friend give me one, but, it really nothing anymore as I grew older. I think for children it just a way to feel more grown up, at least I guess this why I did it. After my dad had his first Heart Attack, mom and him quit cold turkey and never smoked again.
