Just to back up fhotoace, Canon is miles ahead as a system.
That link he posted also indicates that these two bodies are in different leagues: the Canon is a semi pro model that has 9 AF points and does 5 frames per second. I've heard nothing but good things about it. The Olympus only has 3 AF points and manages just 3 FPS.
If you're going to spend $1000 on a body, I'm sure you can also afford the lenses you want (i.e. with image stabilization). So the only thing the Olympus has going for it, is that it's cheaper. It will save you $220 on the body and perhaps another $200 on your standard zoom. That's money well spent on the Canon imho.
If you want to save a buck, get the Canon 400D. Even that can outperform the Olympus, and you'll still have access to Canon's lens line-up.
(I'm not usually a Canon fanboy - I use a Nikon D200 myself)
