Careful about how you do this or he'll find his thumb and you can't throw that away! Seriously pacifiers and thumbs can cause upper pallett damage in the mouth so it's definatly a good idea to get rid of it. talk to your child and explain he/she is a big person now and pacifiers are for little people. Try to make the decision to stop using the pacifier one the child has reached. Also, when they are distracted gently remove the pacifier - out of site out of mind

My friend did this with her 2.5 yo. Maybe it will work for you.
The Binky Fairy. Get a basket, take you child around the house find all of the "binkys" If need to go to your mom's and collect them too. Put them all in the basket and tie it to a tree. Tell your child that tonight the Binky Fairy will come and leave a new toy in place of the binky. Also you can tell your child that the Binky Fairy gives the binkys to babies that don't have them.. Just an idea it worked quite well for my friend's kid.

how old? If under a year no need! If under 2 years no need! When we get to 3 and older...easiest way is just throw it out the window and say bye bye...and then give the child some other form of comfort because it is simply a comfort issue.. A speical blanket, doll, stuffed animal, etc...
good luck

My mom has told nme numerous stories of how i was MADLY addicted to my binky. She said I couldn't go a day without one and even in my crib would put like 10 around my head so that if it fell during the night I could always find one.
The solution she came up with was that she took all the binkys and put them in a basket. Then she instructed me to throw them away, by myself. She said that I threw them away and had so much fun and that miraculously I was fine with it. Later that day U asked for one and she said simply, "gone...thrown away" I guess I got it because my parents still tell me about it!

Cold turkey. Weaning a pacifier doesn't work. If you're worried about him being "bad" for your babysitters, take it away from him while he is with you for a couple days. Don't even give it to him at night. Cold turkey. Gone.

Give the child a doll so they can be a mommy/daddy and give the baby the binky. The child can be all grown up .Don't criticize when they need but be all excited when they don't.

if you don't want him to have it put a little hot sauce on the tip [unless he likes hot sauce] or basically something he doesn't like on it
then when he sucks it he won't like it and therefore give it back to you
keep doing this and then he just won't want it anymore but make sure you use the same thing each time because then it won't be something new each time
