In Tennessee, we dont pay state tax. In virginia, I will be filing for state tax. How can I file state tax for the W2 earned in virginia alone? I have the same question for federal tax too..Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You will need to file a part-year tax return for Virginia (Form 760PY). When you fill out Schedule 1, it will ask you for the income earned while you lived in VA and while you lived outside of VA, and will tax you accordingly.

You do not need to file in Tennessee.

Here is the form and its instructions.

Hello:) You will need to file federal form 1040 for Virgina and Tennessee using both W2's for wages and federal withholding. No state for TN and for Virgina somewhere on the form should be a spot for filling in the part year mark it part year Tennessee and part year Virgina then should ask what time period you lived in both that way it only taxes you for the time in Virgina. Be prepared to know county codes and school district codes for the Virgina more than likely that question is going to be on there. Hope this helps. :) Why would you move from Tennessee I've been there it's beautiful. Gatlinburg was a blast. :)

You file a Part-Year Resident Tax Return in both states. The tax you pay in the
state that you are no longer a resident of, will be a credit towards the tax you pay in your resident state as follows:

Tennessee Part-Year Resident: Show just your W-2 from Tennessee. Indicate that you moved out 5/31/06. Figure your tax liability.

Virginia Part-Year Resident: Show both of your W-2's. Indicate that you moved
into the state 6/1/06. Figure your tax liability. The tax liability you paid to Tennessee becomes a credit towards your Virginia Resident Income Tax,
as "taxes paid to another state".

You will not be double taxed.
