I'm not sure about a couple things. I want to know what charges on your record will prevent you from buying a hand gun.

Domestic violence or any felony's will do it. Otherwise go get one and go through the two week waiting period. You must also be 21 in most states unless it is a shotgun.

if you have something on your record from juvenile days, most states dont look at those. most felony convictions will get you bounced, im not sure what state you are from, but go to or call your local sheriff's department and ask about their requirements for a handgun permit(if your state issues them).
my state does and that is the best way to go, with that I go into a gun shop, wait about 10 minutes while they talk on the phone, then walk out with my gun.

Not knowing where you live, and what charges are on you record, I suggest you call the local gun dealer. They have to know the law in regards to gun sales.

Any kind of felony, or some misdemeanors if they involved other weapons - or violent actions.

Talk to a local gun store - they can usually let you know what your options are.

felony charges. don't go for a handgun, a 12 gage with a shoulder strap really says "I ain't taking any crap from anyone".
If you buy it through the classified ads (personal sale) then you don't have to deal with the paperwork BS
