Water consumption does vary from individual to individual as to how much a person should get. Though most Americans are chronically dehydrated, there is actually a point where you can get too much water, which leads to a condition called hyponatremia, or an imbalance in body sodium. But, you'd have to get a LOT of water for this to happen.
You should be drinking enough water to where your urine is fairly clear (keeping in mind that some supplements color the urine) and you have to go pretty often. If you live in a hot or humid climate, are active, tend to sweat a lot, etc, then you'll need to adjust your water intake accordingly. When you feel thirsty, you're actually already in a dehydrated state.
I don't think the 3-4 liters is necessarily too much, you just need to adjust to your particular body needs.

just like calories the water consumption for everyone will vary.
body size, daily level of activity, time of year, humidity, etc. are all factors. the 64 oz. that is recommended is for the sedentary individual so athletes, etc. will need substantially more than that. the notion that everyone needs the same amount of water is totally preposterous.
i'm 240+ lbs and live in Vegas, I drink 1/2 gallon just during training which is 1.5 hours. in the summer I can easily drink 2 gallons a day.

While I was pregnant, I was advised to drink between 36 to 64oz a day plus meals. I know if you drink that much water without eating, you will get the health benefit of cleansing your system, but you will also compromise the calories you need as well. Try to balance between eating sensible, healthy meals and drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated and you will be fine!! So my opinion is water is always healthy, just don't consume it alone!!
Be blessed!!

You can get kidney failure from too much water. A rough estimate is 1oz per 2 lbs of body weight. This of course depends on how active you are. You will need more if you you exercise.
