Some cops seem to get off on the power they have and treat people like crap. I've had cops stop me and call me an ex-con, give me grief for nothing and make threats just because of my record and have seen them go over the top with others for just querying them.

I know I've been in trouble and they have a job to do but sometimes they just end up making you hate them more.

Have dealt with some alright ones too but not usually.

The local cops have a driver training place on the local college grounds. I often times pass by them walking across the field and I always say" how's it going" or something like that. Most don't even respond and the ones that do, you can tell it is killing them to have to.

Good question! Respect is earned, not a privilege. This theory applies to everyone, including cops. Do some cops have attitude problems? Of course. So do the people that they have to deal with every day.
As a long-time police field training officer, one of the most important things that I try to teach young cops is to show respect whenever possible. This is not always possible, but in the majority of cases it does help.
If it was only applied both ways, a lot less people would be getting arrested.

I've never dealt with an "all right one," and that is a sad thing because I work with cops all the time for my job. And I don't have a record at all and I still get the same foolishness you do.

Personally, I think they are trying for job security. They keep getting innocent people until the innocent person can't take it anymore and says they'll just do something wrong. If they have to go to jail anyway, they should at least have some fun along the way and maybe a little extra money too. So the presence of police actually increases criminal activity, and that is how they do it.

The way they treat with respect is by treating people with dignity, not using profanity, not acting out the way some citizens do by not following instructions.

Not all cops have to act bright, and bushy tailed, they're just people like all of us. Some people just don't smile, or say hello, and they live their lives this way. Others do go out of their way to be nice to people in need.

As long as you give some courtesy yourself, maybe they won't feel like they're constantly being tested. In my experiences, even just asking questions like a tourists in New York, they have been pretty friendly.

There is no doubt that some people, whether officers or otherwise, maintain rather immaturish attitudes.

Having been an officer for over 30 years, I've learned that you treat others as you want them to treat you!

On the other hand...I've learned that despite how well you treat others, there will always be a handful that are hateful no matter how polite and professional you are!

Best wishes!

Maybe, maybe not, but try to put yourself in their shoes. Its not an easy job. But then again everyone has the right to retain their dignity. Its too open ended. Im going with the middle road on this one.

Yes,,, i think more people would respect them if they gave respect.. I see so many cop shows and the cops are throwing the suspects to the ground and pushing them around.. that also includes Bounty hunters.. like Dog.. i saw a show and his daughter throw a lady to the ground.. the lady was standing there and made no attempt to run... and that Baby Lisa slammed her to ground.. she had no reason... and cops do the same to people..

I've been driving for 55 years and never met a disrespectful police officer.
Looking at what you say in your question, I'd guess that you bring on any disrespect a police officer might show.
They don't hate you, you sound paranoid.

That is a very genealized statement. Not all cops act the same. What is your career? Do all of you act the same, treat people the same, etc?
