today i have to begin self-administered b-12 injections and will have to do this for the rest of my life.......its only once a month so thats not bad.... i have a high threshhold for pain and i am not afraid of needles - as a matter of fact i would rather take a needle to a pill anyday......are there some tips/techniques that i should be aware of?...i am probably going to have someone do this for me on at least the first couple of times....i am just a little aprehensive about getting a shot from someone other than a nurse/doc....my doc never even advised me on proper disposal.....which i figure as a given (im not a total ignoramous)....i'm just in the dark overall.......anyone?

I get IM injections every 2 weeks. My wife does it and it didn't take very long to teach. Talk to MD/Nurse for help to teach someone. I am a paramedic and doing either SQ injections or IM injections are easy. For IM (butt) find crest of hip and round part of butt and give shot in between. Make sure to pull back after your insert into tissue to make sure you don't hit a vein. Make sure you go in @90 deg. It's a piece o cake to teach. There might be even a short class a local hospital. I am also in agreement with getting injection instead of other alternatives.

I don't know about the administration, but don't just throw your needles out. Go to your local pharmacy and ask them about needle disposal, they should accept them and give you some container to keep used syringes in. That's what we did at the lab I used to work at.

I don't think I'd be able to give myself an injection after watching Requiem for a Dream. His arm was gross, now I have to look away when I get shots at the doctor.

Your doctor should have had you trained on how to do the shots. I assume it is sub cue shots, so pinch up the skin before giving a shot.

You should have been given a sharps container to store used syringes. Ask you doctor or by one from a drug store.

Good luck, I give myself 4-5 shots/day depending.

I take three injections of Insulin daily. I take the injections into my abdomen and thighs by rotating sites. I press the skin fold well ,till it causes pain like I am pinching myself. That removes the pain of needle prick.

I used to give myself injections of B12 too. I did it for extra energy. I found it easiest to inject in the stomach, very simple and believe me, you don't feel it very much. It feels kind of like a bug bite.

You need to properly dispose your syringes in a special sharps container, you can obtain one at any pharmacy.

personally, i would consult your doctor w/ your concerns.

my mom used to give my sister her allergy shots...i know she had to have a certain container to put the used needles in and she had to turn them back into the doc once a month (sis was getting shots weekly)...and i know that she had to do it in the arm, and make sure there was no blood in the needle...make sure you tap the syringe to get the air bubbles out before giving yourself the shot...
not sure how helpful that is...but...that is all i have...
