A buddy of mine was in the Navy Reserves for a while. He got sick of the stupid BS his unit would do every month and decided it was a waste of time. He wanted out and found a rule that says if you live more than 100 miles (or so) away from your base you can be put on Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR). If you're IRR you avoid the monthly attendance requirement, so he moved somewhere that was more than 100 miles away from the nearest base. He was young and could afford to do that. If you're four hours away then you are already far enough (unless you drive really slowly). That was a while ago, but the rule may still be in place. Look into it if you want.

I used to have members that lived in MN and GA (unit was in Northern Nevada). There is a Federal requirement to pay for lodging/food. What most of us did was billet them in the armory (we had showers and lockers) along with cots and everything else. We reimbursed them for three meals during the weekend drill.
