You can get a good picture watching the movie "An inconvenient truth".

You also can check the "Global Warming" section on http://60minutes.yahoo.com

Also, you can watch the "day after tomorrow". It shows how the atlantic circulation has an impact on all northern hemisphere.

You also can research about "El Niño" that has a cyclic impact and is related with currents in the pacific ocean...

The principle is easy, the water moves and transports hot water to cold zones and viceversa. It acts like a weather "motor".

There is a phenomena called the Gulf stream (GS) around Britain near the sea surface, it ends up in the Artic, Cold water sinks so as the GS cools it descends and returns to the Equatorial regions rewarming as it goes. This system breaks down as the average air temperature rises. The falling off of the warm water reaching the pole allows more ice to melt and enter the water, eventually melting and raising the sea level. The Elnino and Elnina need to be examined in relation to circulation and it effects on the coastal regions and their climate. Examining weather formation and circulation patterns will help to describe changes in rain levels/ drought patterns and crop production changes, Finally try Gia in the Internet. It should give you a good alternative theory about global climate and how it was formed / can be destroyed. If you have the time read. Rachael Carson, The silent spring for an idea of what might happen if we continue living the way we do today. This is a controversial book!!!

Consider the ocean as the engine that influences climate. Indeed, being a large body of water with massive heat retention capability, you have something that will directly influence any nearby air mass. The circulation of ocean currents can bring warm tropical waters to nothern continents. Hence the reason why Europe has a milder winter than Canada.

The ocean has a major impact on climate and weather. Water has a high heat capacity, so the oceans keep the temperature of the world stable by soaking up heat on warm days and giving up heat on cold days. It can also carry heat from warm areas to cold ones more effectively than the air, by way of ocean currents.

The concern is how much global warming is expected to impact the sea levels.

This should give you some good insight.
